OEM mounting location details

Regarding mounting in a '99: you MIGHT be able to mount in the stock location, but it will TIGHT.
I reused the lower bracket. It attaches to the MS case using small bolts/nuts/washers. A zip tie between the front of the case and the upper bracket stabilizes it. ****IF you do this, you need to buy a 90 degree, serial adapter for your communication cable. There isn't enough room to attach a serial cable using the OEM lower bracket because the MS sits too close to the firewall. Another option may be to cut out part of the firewall insulation but that didn't occur to me until just now. I can't remember where I ordered the adapter but it required slight modification (dremel tool) to screw it to the MS because the mounting screws weren't long enough. I could have bought longer screws but it was easier to cut the plastic than drive to find longer, tiny bolts with proper thread pitch! I didn't take any pictures of the modified adapter. My serial cable screws into the adapter and exits towards the driver's front tire. I ran the cable under the dash, down the console, and up into the storage compartment through the hole for the truck/gas release levers. I considered posting a "How To Mount" post but figured if you can't figure out how to mount it sercurely, maybe you shouldn't be installing it. :loser: ;) |

Below are pictures and a brief write up that Jesse99James did.
I bought a DB9, 90 degree adapter. I used MS Paint to show how I modified it. The screws/bolts weren’t long enough to attach to the serial port on my MSII. Cutting the DB9 adapter was easier than locating longer screws. Beware, there are multiple (4?), 90 degree adapters. You do NOT want the two that have screws on the Female side. The two you want will have screws on the Male side. The only difference is the direction it points. I chose to buy the one that points towards the driver’s side. Either may work BUT I can’t remember if there was a reason I chose this adapter. ...there may be an obstruction towards the passenger side. I also used a zip tie to secure the front of the MS case to the upper bracket. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333542335 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333542335 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1333542335 |
Oh ----, I was thinking this was just like my MSpnp, what kind of cable do I need to plug into the MS2+++ computer?
My package arrived yesterday, there is a two-day window for me to pick it up, and I was told yesterday they will not give it to me because my delivery address differs from my license. This is ------- retarded. I'm going back to argue more today. |

Either a serial port or a USB to serial port. If you have the gear to connect with the MSPNP, then you don't need anything else to connect to the Enhanced MS2.

The pictures are only for mounting it in the stock location on an NB.

Do I need to pull a fuse or anything crazy like that or just plug in and start doing burn-outs?

I don't have cruise control so I ran my wideband O2's signal wire and the vacuum hose through the hole in the firewall that was intended for the cruise control cable. YMMV for vacuum hose and other wiring. |
What wire are you guys using for the WB input?
I typically drill a big hole in the passenger side footwell for all the accessory wires, then foam it shut so it's somewhat water tight. If I ever get the dash out of the green car I'm doing a bulkhead there in its place. |
I ahve a few dumb questions that I'll open to the peanut gallery rather than email Dimitris over and over.
I'd like to use the factory o2 sensor harness if possible to run the WB signal, Gauge signal, and the other two wires for calibration. Can I use those wires for this? If so, is it a bitch to add a pin to the connector for the factory o2 signal wire? |
After the two day waiting period, I can finally pick mine up today! I'm super pumped! Its plug and play donut day.
Whats the advantage to using old wires for your wideband? |

I guess you can do that, sure. Remember to disconnect the stock O2 and EGR.

I don't have to run any wires through the firewall that way. I'd like to do the same thing with the EGR wires for VICS control.

The car runs and the base-tune is pretty damn good.
I did one ---- up though and forgot to cut the black/wht coil pack wires. The good news is that the tach seems to work normally for the 30 seconds the car ran on both the coil and the MS driven tach, lol. I immediately cut the wires though it's still a guess on long term. |
Awesome! :bigtu:

Whats this about cutting wires? I thought it was a PnP situation. I haven't had the chance to plug mine in yet as I'm waiting on my timming light to come in, but I didn't think there was any modifing to be done other than the one engine bay fuse. Im running a 1994 1.8L, no IAT and stock TPS. Please tell me your refering to your 1.6 and I don't need to cut up my ingition harness. |
Hustler had to cut his, since he wanted to run different coilpacks. You don't have to cut anything.
|
Btw all the ECUs of the original group buy have been shipped, so this thread can now be locked. :)
|
Tell us what you bought with all the profit? We're counting on the eMS2 group buy to solve the Greek debt crisis. Then we'll lock the thread, lolol.
|
haha
|
Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since I ordered mine. I'm anxious to hear when it's ready to ship. :D

Sorry, I'm new here and can't PM yet. Mike.S |
FYI:
For anyone considering quality of service from a guy on the other side of Earth, I've had some minor issues on my car and Dimitris was kind enough to make a new firmware for me, then use a "Netmeeting-like" program to run through the firmware burning process for me, recalibrate all the sensors, then make a few adjustments on the fly. He didn't have to because I was totally capable, but he was kind enough to do it for me all while I drank beer, sitting inside my car, with him taking care of it over wifi. He's also answered endless emails and reviewed several logs on my AC actuation problem which has in no way overshadowed the increase in performance or reliabiity I got from a stand-alone computer. I will definitely replace my old MSpnp in my track car with an MS3 built by him. |
I'm still antsy to get mine. This coming Wednesday will make 2 months since I ordered it. I want to get rid of this Hydra so bad.
|
Why get rid of Hydra? What version is it? I might be interested, let me know.
|
Version 2.5. It'll be on the For Sale section once I get the MS up and running.
|
If it's for '99-2000 shoot me a note with your email address, please.

I bought the one you have linked from amazon, it fit perfectly, no trimming or longer screws required. I mounted my MS2 in the factory location with the serial port toward the firewall and the vac. hose and harness toward the seat. Mine points the serial port toward the passenger side of the car, the serial cable then goes behind the dash to the passenger side.
|
I just did it 2 weeks ago. I reused the upper stock ECU mounting bracket and used it in the lower mounting position of the stock ECU. The MS2 sits between the brake and clutch with loads of room. It wasn't hard at all. I ordered the adapter from amazon and it currently points toward the passenger side. Everything clears fine.
|
I mounted my DIYPNP exactly the same way msm782 did, but I used a Radio Shack Gigaware Serial to USB adapter with no 90° adapter. It fit, but it was tight.

So I ordered the FA881 DB9 Right-angle connector from that blackbox.com website and got it yesterday. I totally forgot about the lip/edge on the side of the MegaSquirt that has the DB9 connection. msm782, I can see why you got the connector that points in the opposite direction to avoid that but I still don't see how yours points to the passenger side still, did you flip the MegaSquirt upside down?
I took a photo of the connector I bought (which was suggested back on page 22 I believe) and added it here for others to view. Did anyone else get a similar connector and was able to clear the lip on the MS cover? Other photo added for reference from page 22. I am guessing that I can swap the screws from one end to the other? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1340117313 |

I see what you did with the bracket now. I didn't use the lower bracket at all. I used the upper bracket and used a bolt&nut to go through one of the supplied holes on the flange at the edge of the case (the flange on the front and back that provides a hole on each corner of the MS2 case). That was then bolted to the stock lower bracket mounting location on the firewall between the clutch and brake. This seemed to work the best for me. Sorry for the poor quality pic, its hard to get a good shot up there:

Can someone provide me with good quality pics of how the stock ECU is bolted up there? Maybe I can figure out something.
|
Hell, mine fits in there better than that... but I think I'm zip-tied at the top. I'll snap some pics tonight.
