Forgot about this thread, I'll post it here too. My initial review. I've only raced one race so far and tinkered with settings. Goddamn load screens are retardedly long if you don't install, which I am waiting forever for it to do now.

Well, being a GT fanboy, I have to say..... meh. I haven't played it much since I opted to not yet install it to the HDD, since it has a long *** wait time, and I wanted to play now... but that is nearly impossible with 2 minute waits between screens. Feels like I'm playing a game on a 10 year old computer. But that is hardly a nag, just install it. Menus are awesome, everything looks and sounds beautiful, lots of features and options I have yet to tinker with. In game racing however is underwhelming. Feels pretty much exactly like you would expect a GT game, a bit arcade like (doesn't help that I have the shitty 3-axis and not the DS controller). Pretty much exactly like Prologue. Graphics are not improved that I can tell over Prologue, and I'm not sure yet, since I have only raced Sunday Cup at Tsukuba, but it seems like the 16 car field is reduced to 8, unless it's limited to 8 for the little races on the shorter tracks. Also seems like weather and time changes are limited to only a few tracks, instead of all of them (even though you now have control over headlights, high and low beam and flash, wipers and... a horn?). That was a big selling point for me, having the option to race any track in day or night and with variable weather conditions. Car tuning seems to have gone in reverse from GT4, giving less info and specific parts, and more of the "Stage 1" bullshit. Overall, I'm not really impressed with it, but I'll have to wait for the install and try again and play it some more. I hate to say it, but so far Forza 3 beats in where it counts, in the racing.

My ID is Ubootmensch, I'll be doing some online racing I'm sure over the holiday and weekend. Hit me up for some racing.

IGN review.

Quote:
"Customization options, however, are limited, especially in the wake of Forza 3's more comprehensive efforts. Beneath the skin it's detailed enough with several layers of upgrades that can be applied, (although, strangely, it's no longer possible to upgrade a car's brakes) but beyond that there's little else that can be done; paint jobs are limited to either the body or wheels while bodywork options are few across both the standard and the premium cars.

Within Gran Turismo 5's 1,000 plus garage, there's a clear divide. Some 200 of the cars are given the premium treatment, and these examples are often achingly beautiful, a fact that's heart-stoppingly clear in the game's photo mode. Here it's easy to get carried away, pausing a replay then toying with the shutter speed and aperture, spending more time gawping at the cars than actually driving them.

It's a level of care that hasn't been extended to the standard cars that form the bulk of Gran Turismo 5's car list. While they're far from unattractive, their PlayStation 2 heritage shows, with textures looking flat and comparatively lifeless, and the omission of a cockpit view and a blunted damage model gives them a distinctly second class flavor. Thankfully it's not something that's notable in the heat of a high-speed battle, but when the game does show its standard class cars up close the difference can be jarring; edges are ragged and shadows sit uncomfortably, making them look awkward alongside their more polished brethren. "

A.I woes return

"A-Spec's races aren't helped by the return of the series' now trademark zombie A.I. Any tweaks that have been made are hard to decipher as by and large your fellow racers will pay little attention to your on-track maneuvers, often braking at inexplicable moments and turning what should be a high-octane contest into a comic bout of very expensive bumper cars. "

Damage model weaker than a a wet tissue.

"The inclusion of damage is so slight as to be insignificant, and even the most violent of crashes will only result in a polygon shifting slightly ajar. There's an unconvincing lack of weight to the big on-track collisions, and as before in Gran Turismo games it does much to break the immersion its handling model does so well to establish."

sometimes it takes forever to go from screen to screen, sometimes it's fast.

I played for the past 4 hours. Golded the B license, Sunday Cup, beginner & intermediate kart races (easy money there, 35k for 5 laps!)

Obviously I bought the Eunos. I put a s/c on it, it has 210hp and weighs around 840kg. Massive fun with the G27 with all aids off. The no-ABS thing can be a bitch sometimes, spinning me out.

Took my first photo today, but I suck and don't know much about exposure and iso and all that.

I can only hope that RPF-1's are unlockable...I'm level 8. Giving it a rest for a few hours.

I bought my PS3 years ago for just this occasion, and now I'm nowhere near my PS3...

Crap.

I agree with this review completely.

I had to quit playing just now because I got fed up with the same damn mindless AI that rams you from behind without end, brake in the middle of high speed straights for no reason, or swipe you from the side and run you into the grass. So ******* frustrating and upsetting that they haven't even attempted to fix this. Forza 3 did an amazing job with AI, physics, damage and overall feel. This is basically GT4 mixed with GT5 Prologue. The extras outside of the racing are amazing though, but that isn't what I bought it for. Give me Forza 3 racing with GT5 extra stuff and I'll be happy. Ultimately I am very very let down by this gigantic wait for a game that feels lacking in almost every way imaginable. If they somehow release a GT6 in 15 years, I won't be buying it.

I also bought my PS3 for this about 4 years ago, then sold it and bought another about 6 months ago, for this ******* game, and it's not really worth a ****.

^ lol and I just noticed the chinchilla or whatever in the cage. Awesome.

Yeah the AI sucks in GT, that's always been the case. So what? It's more about racing against yourself, and your friends. The AI sucks in every racing game. Forza is no better.

I'm on level 13. Gold A and B licenses, working on IC license.

Took some photos of my monster miata. 247hp.
my settings:
aero/downforce set to max
camber -1.5 f/ -2.5 r
toe zeroed out
front sway set to 2, rear to zero.
Forgot the rest. Handles amazing, hard to get to drift though.

Have you actually played Forza? AI IS better, MUCH better. They sense that you are there, they don't ram you off the track, they race aggressively without wrecking you. You can pressure them to get around, whereas in GT they don't care that you are there, and you hitting them is like hitting a brick wall. You go off track and they keep motoring along. It's ze gay.

Racing against yourself and friends with poor physics and unrealistic handling. Forza 3>>>GT5 (again, I'm a long time PlayStation and GT fanboy)

You get a wing in GT Auto I think

NA6C-Guy, I know what you mean about the handling. 7k clutch dump in a stock MX5 and no wheelspin? I beg to differ, also turn all the aids off and try braking into a corner with a bit of steering lock, hello snap oversteer, MX5's don't do that either.

I'm just dissapointed, the game doesn't feel finished to me.

Yep. I'm not using a wheel, which might help, but my near stock NA was nearly undrivable. No matter how gently I brakes and steered into a corner, the damn thing would start fishtailing all over the place and put me into a wall nose first. NOT how my car handles, not even close. None of the few cars I have driven have felt even a little correct. In driving physics, this game might as well be GT3, because they have made no attempts to improve it since then. Shame on Polyphony. Even after doing mods to the car (which suck, now you do stages of parts, not individual parts, dumbed down for the non racing fans I guess) the cars still don't feel like real cars you would drive in real life. No amount of tuning makes any of the cars feel fun to drive, much unlike Forza 3, in which most of the cars felt pretty accurate for a console racing game, and were fun to drive at the ragged edge of their capability.

I feel the same way NA6C-Guy does.

Edit: My brother is thinking that they'll be cleaning up the bullshit with updates. I hope so too.

That's the beauty of connecting a console to the internet, they can fix problems without having to stamp more discs.

^ yeah 247 lol. That's the max with supercharger on the 1.6L. Not sure if it would be more if I go turbo instead. I just wanted s/c as that's my goal in reality.

I'm sure they will fix GT5. Proof: http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=133518

edit: just noticed your sig, 247hp lol awesome

Don't have it yet but I do have a PS3 and a FF wheel so I just need to wait until the Black Friday mass hysteria settles down.

One of the better in-car videos I have found after a quick search on YT

It looks pretty good on my laptop in 720p full-screen. But I am giving it some latitude due to the video compression on YT that is almost certainly reducing the quality of the above video. So, for those who have it, how much better is it in person vs the 720p version of the above?

Sucks about the AI.

Yet adding a supercharger still doesn't change the engine noise, where's the whine?

Obsessed with detail my ****! He's been on holiday for the past 6 years and has re-released GT4

It's going to take some serious updates to fix this games downfalls, being pretty much the backbone of the game, the physics engine.

I also noticed the steering, at least with the controller is awfully nonlinear. Especially in the one NASCAR event I attempted. It's like there is a threshold at about half travel where it goes from "OK, barely turning" to "holy **** I'm sideways!". Less noticeable in the regular racing, but still noticed a little, by me anyway, maybe I'm imagining it. Probably has more to do with car physics and going from normal driving to extreme oversteer for some reason. It's just so frustrating. I feel like I've been lied to all these years waiting for this game. And I stood up for them against Forza guys, with me saying it would be 10x better. Not so.

This game is probably pretty good for someone who doesn't expect perfection, and who isn't terribly concerned with accuracy and some pretty nit picky things that most would overlook without thinking twice. For me, I just can't overlook the poor physics, highly exaggerated car damage models and the very half finished feel that I get from the overall product. It's uncalled for with a game this ******* long in the making, and from a huge company like Polyphony. This garbage coming from the people who gave us the original GT and GT3 breaks my heart. Those were groundbreaking for their day, and they seemed to pretty much stop there and focused their attention on the lesser important things of the game.

All these negative comments about the game made me so disappointed. I was banking on GT5 being better than Forza since it also is a disappointment which could have been much better. I guess instead of buying a ps3 and GT5 I supposed I should just focus on getting my car track ready.
