Makes perfect sense for a recoil-operated semiauto. Add enough mass to the slide to damp it and prevent it from cycling fully.

I'd be very curious to see how well this worked with a blowback pistol.

 

you just have to hold onto it harder, however youre better off sticking your thumb in the way of that hammer on double-actions like the 1911.

Another technique is to push the slide out of battery. Most modern pistols will not fire out of battery.

 

Way Back, when I was in Basic Training we were taught to grab the strong hand and push on the muzzle to push the pistol out of battery before the first shot. Your timing had to be good or you lost part of your hand.

Driving to work in the pouring rain, trying to pass a slow crown victoria before exiting.
Cant get passed because of even slower car in middle lane. Get back behind crown vic.
Crown vic slows to 20 mph through on-ramp. Im tailgating to express my displeasure.
Finally starts accelerating. Im at 1/4 throttle. Shift into 5th gear.
Crown vic continues to accelerate. He is in it to win it.
Im at 1/2 throttle, still tailgating. Now going 90 mph.
Go to 15/16 throttle, and pass with my mighty 5 liter. He looks mad as I drive by.
Lots of traffic ahead. Realize I am being infantile.
Keep driving way too fast, dodging through traffic so I dont have to face crown vic driver.

Not sure which of us is Florida man.

 

I'm reminded of Florida every time I see a Crown Vic on the road.

Which is several times per minute when I'm anywhere outside.

Speaking of Florida. Driving home from work today up 75 i watched the Florida plated Honda Odyssey in front of me bolt across 2 lanes, down the grass through the ditch and up the other side onto 275. Apparently he missed his exit by about a half mile and decided he could make it. Which he did.
