Ironically, this is one of the very few scenarios in which that would actually make sense.
Except that I "fixed" the furnace. Apparently there's a pressure switch on the combustion exhaust stack to sense whether the fan is running before opening the gas solenoid.
It's not there anymore.

What is interesting is how it got so bad in an automatic vehicle. .110" endplay on the crank. Engine sounded fine; I was removing the balancer to tighten the timing chain cover due to an oil leak and found the end play. I figured this may be a good reason for an LS swap but a reman crank with all bearings is only $212 from autozone. Ordered, I'll see if it ever shows up...the 'reman cranks R us' places I contacted directly all didn't have AMC cores.
