I have recently become aware of a style of block heater which I'd not previously encountered:
It goes inline with the lower radiator hose. And while I'm somewhat skeptical about how much convective flow there is going to be against a closed thermostat, the reviews do seem highly positive, it's inexpensive, and the install should be extremely easy.

My assumption here was that since the path from the mixing manifold up through the block and to the rear-head outlet into the heater core is roughly symmetrical with the path from the mixing manifold up through the heater core and into the back of the head (stock NB2 config, no reroute), that this would not be a primary convective route.
Of course, conductive heat transfer is also a thing.
Leaning in the direction of trying one of these, as it's a low-cost, low-work thing.

Once any imbalance occurs, the convection will work. It is hard to predict which direction the water will move, but it will move. I strongly suggest you try it.

In completely unrelated news:
I have long abhorred fancy bathroom sinks. Specifically, the ones which place the notion of "being elaborately exotic for the sake of impressing hypothetical guests" above that of "being useful for washing your hands."
I have discovered the singularity:
Look closely at that faucet. It's needlessly elaborate. It deposits the water into a chrome-plated canal, whereupon it cascades gently towards the user until reaching the edge, at which point it forms a little waterfall.
And you know what? It ******* works. It deposits the water at a location which is nearly central to the basin, and relatively high up. As such, it is useful for washing your entire hand, rather than just the fingertips. If anything, this faucet is better at being a bathroom sink faucet than any other I have ever encountered which was not labeled as a kitchen faucet by the manufacturer.
