A much smaller genny than mine (4 cyl, single turbo), but... damn, they are pushing it hard.

I worked on a few ships running Alco main engines. When they were running hard, the exhaust manifolds where they fed into the turbo would glow so red you could actually see what appeared to be waves moving through the metal. Disconcerting the first time I saw it.

Guess the application:

Hint: it's not a marine engine.

Dish 4 needs to move in a few days, changing from Galaxy 17 to Galaxy 16. Not a huge move, but man, those nuts were on there right.

Been soaking 'em in PB Blaster for a week, and this morning, with the correct tool acquired ($122 from McMaster), they finally budged.

AeroKroil is an even better penetrating fluid than PB Blaster.

Sometimes the correct tool for the job is your brain. I know I've posted this photo before, but it's relevant to the following story.

I came into work today and the new kid was struggling with busting apart some unions.
The poor kid had 4' pipe wrench with 8' cheater pipe hanging off it with everything he had. I told him if I could do it without the cheater pipe I get to harass him relentlessly for being a little wuss.

I gave them unions a few good whacks with a BFH and do my come-along trick. The second one, all it needed was a little percussive persuasion and it busted free by hand.
The older i get, the less back breaking hard work i actually do and my body thanks me for it. I just hope the lesson taught today was absorbed.

If you haven't tried it before, hit on opposite sides of the union with two hammers (at the same time) and see where that gets you.

Oh, I hear that.

A few years ago, I needed to move a rack containing a new router into position in the equipment room. Probably 400-500 lbs in total, and it had to go up onto a hollow 3" riser, with about an inch lip.

Low ceiling, so no space for overhead rigging.

In the end, I remembered that there was a demolition crew swinging hammers down in studio 3. So I went out and bought a couple cases of beer and a tray of fancy sandwiches, and early that afternoon, the rack was in place. I submitted for reimbursement on the beer & sandwiches, and the GM had a good laugh when I explained it.

What I found most amusing about this wrench is that it comes wrapped up like a Christmas gift:

Double hammer trick!?!? Nope, never heard of it, but if it involves more than one hammer i'm interested. I love to live dangerously, but is that a trick you let the apprentice try first?

Here is a picture i took of the moon while sitting in the hot tub the other night. That ring is not a camera trick and is actually a thing called a lunar halo and i guess they're pretty common.
Took me 31 years to see one, so either it's not common or i don't pay attention.
