That's an R62A train, mid-80s vintage. They also have 'em on the 7 and S lines.
Most of the trains of that era, both IRT and BMT, have the same basic color scheme, going as far back as the mid 70s vintage R46s that are still in use on the A line (those cars absolutely suck- the HVAC system has only two settings (off and broken) and you can never hear the conductor.)
The newer trains, like the R142 and R160 have a much simpler design scheme, with light blue bench seats. I find these more efficient in terms of seating- it's easier to squeeze more people into the same linear seat space. They also have automated, pre-recoded station announcements which are actually intelligible and moving-map displays which show the present location of the train relative to all of the stops on that route. Very nice, especially if you're riding a line that you're not intimately familiar with.

Now if they can just get the metrocard/turnstiles working better...fill up metrocard for one fare, swipe metrocard into turnstile as you walk thru, crush your nuts, read display that says "reswipe same card", swipe to then see "card empty", your F'ed, wife mouths off at you and your retardness, Guy behind gate has compassion and lets you thru. Anyway...other than that NYC subways system kicks major *** IMHO, with my limited Manhattan-only experience.

What's odd is that the A line is the other major JFK connector (via Howard Beach) and those are some of the oldest, crappiest trains still in the system.

I don't think I have ever gotten into a situation where I "lost" a fare because of it- you just have to do what the display says; re-swipe the card at that turnstile- do not move to a different one.
Still and all, much preferable to carrying a bunch of tokens around in your pocket. I don't miss those days.
Yeah, every car has a little plaque in it listing the manufacturer. Kawasaki and Bombardier seem to build most of the ones presently in service.

6 hours in REM makes me wish I did a better job welding. Next time (on the V6 mani's) I'll try tumbling it first to get out the grain marks. But still...da-yummm.

Kind of a neat lineup. ipod Touch 2nd gen 16gb, HTC EVO 4G, Samsung GalaxySII 4G Touch.. The screen resolution on the SII Touch isn't over the top, but the screen is just so vivid its ridiculous! The camera takes superb photographs in nearly any light and the 720p video recording is also out of this world quality! (Sound capture does suck on videos, though.) The S2 has 16gb memory onboard with 32gb tflash acceptance and the battery lasts me just over 16 hours with average use! Only thing that tweaks me is they removed the damn dedicated mini-hdmi output and integrated it into the USB slot, so you need ANOTHER adapter... Touch sensitivity is through the roof, as is the dual-core 1.2ghz processor (which I've already OC'd.) Wicked if you're looking for an Android phone.
