Agreed- nothing went wrong. If the MX5 driver is afraid, he probably should find another hobby. Things don't go awry until the being passed isn't predictable- like moving to make way for the fast car.
I appreciate the space available to turbocharge in the attached image. Lots of cool things going on there.

I dont think it would be that bad. Its not pulsating as much as it would be NA.
Ive tuned cars running open downpipes like that and Ive never seen any behavior that would lead me to believe that the AFR readings were off in any way. Not even at idle.

But like why would you put it pre turbo? What are you measuring pre turbo?

The problem I have with it is how close to the outlet it is...it's going to be metering atmosphere if anything.
There's about 6 feet of piping the sensor could be placed at between the turbo and block that would work much better and meter the exhaust accurately.

Not sure what role you think the turbo has, but it has nothing to do with combustion. I doubt the pressures would damage the sensor, and I doubt the heat is anywhere close to as it would be bolted next to the block, which is the main reason we install aft turbo. The sensor as located now, will give you **** for accuracy, hell when I have the slightest exhaust leak in my setup, even when much further downstream than the sensor, it reports back lean.
You think that somehow atmosphere is going to make it up the pipe? Ever put your hand at the end of an exhaust pipe while a car is idling?
