well ------- DUH! I'm no fancy heart doctor but if you were to make a damn fluid pump, why the hell would you make it pulse, makes no sense whats so ever. Evolution made the heart pump because it wasn't smart enough to make the damn arteries contract sequentially along their length. Like the esophagus. If all the big artieries did that there'd be no need for a heart either. ----. As long as the organs get oxygen they don't care if it comes in squirts or not. I'm sure it'd be 'better' if it was continuous anyway.

And once man comes along, why the hell would you try to make a replacement pulse.

A $25 Arduino can PWM control a DC motor based off a 'simple' blood oxygen sensor. I'm sure my Pierburg waterpump can push blood just as well as glycol. DIY heart surgery anyone?!

I may switch careers and start earning money. How long until heart surgeon medical education dept is paid off at heart surgeon salary? Probably right around the time I'd want to retire.

That turbine-based artificial heart is pretty neat. I've occasionally wondered why that hasn't been more progress in the field, given that the heart is one of the more frequently required transplant organs, and one of the ones that you can't really do without for very long.

 

 

The veins don't "contract" to pump blood however there are one way valves in there to prevent backflow. When those fail, that's when you get viscous veins, swollen feet/legs and other "container" issues. In this case imagine the body as a bag of fluid. It's obvious all the fluid would be at the bottom of the bag. This was the issue with non pulsing heart. Until they started running trials they thought that this would happen as with a continuous flow, those valves stop working as now they are always open instead of little pumps of blood, little blood is forced, then little more and so on.

 

I realize you're most likely joking, but everything in the human body is made to work off the pumping action of the heart to a cellular level, and vise versa. Saying we should have evolved with a continuous pump is just as likely as us evolving with MS for a brain*.

As for the heart surgeon thing, assuming you start at a high school graduate level, you'd have to take 4 year of college, 4 years of medical school, 4 years as a surgical resident, and most likely 1-2 years of a cardiac fellowship. You'd then be ready to try to get into a private practice, where you'd be roughly a quarter to half million dollars in debt, and make roughly half that per year**.


*which would be awesome, seeing as though all the newbs who can't tune correctly would blow their brains up, like a survival of the fittest.

**this is assuming you have the brains and then hand skill to complete all the schooling/clinical work.
