There is no one set of "primary" colors. It's a question of the method in which they are employed.
RGB are additive primaries. RYB are subtractive primaries.
The use of RGB is easy to illustrate visually by passing white light through a prism, or by looking up at a rainbow. This is probably a simple concept for children to grasp, as compared to explaining how lithographic printing works.

I also really loved Wright Bros vs. Mario Bros (yes, I know everyone else hated it), and Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs vs. HAL.
