Remove the smog pump, install a hotter coil and wiring, advance the timing, and raise the fuel on a carb v8 and you gain a significant amount of power vs. the modern.
You do realize that a 3-way cat has very little flow restriction, and a smog pump takes very little HP to run (if it even uses a pump driven system)?

do you car, breh?

Why does everyone think its the pump delete that gains significant horsepower? Its the valved manifold that restricts power, and I never said anything about the cat.

I think what Pen2 is trying to say is that with stability control and all that, you cant just hit the floor and let all your horses go. Cars of today might be faster, but they are more tame. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Because everyone needs to be able to lay down 200' black marks, and slide around every corner on their daily commute. Most all traction control and driver assists can be turned off easily.

Give me a new car over an old car any day. The only reason an old car might SEEM faster is all of the noise, lack of soundproofing, sloppy chassis/frame, and shitty tires. Modern cars are just more comfortable, refined and composed. If that somehow makes it feel slow (which I don't think it does) then so be it.

I totally agree. I was just trying to point out what (I think) Pen was getting at. Driving muscle cars with stock brakes and suspension are fun until you want to hit some twisty roads. Then they're just frustrating.

My choice of "muscle car" (using the term loosely)

Some European NB hillclimb action. I wonder if anyone on the site knows them.

I think most of us are incredulous about Pen's comments because they were in response to a comment about a 1979 pony car making 140 BHP. If you want to make the argument that cars today are less responsive, I could maybe see pointing out the weight gains caused by safety and creature comforts...

Because I like data:

1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe
Weight: 3200 - 3300 lbs
Power: 190 BHP
MPG: About 14 mixed
Price (in 2013 dollars): $16,500 - $20,873

2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS Coupe
Weight: 3900 lbs
Power: 426 BHP
MPG: EPA est 16 combined
Price (in 2013 dollars): $32k - $36k

This, mostly. I like modern cars but its absolutely CRAZY to see newer cars with more plastic bits, weighing more than 40 year old cars made of pure steel. Mx5autoxer also understood one of my other points. Not everyone is tracking their car, hell I see an old muscle car as a street cruiser and nothing but, even if it has been retrofitted like my friend's grandpop's car, which he autocrosses.

most of the money went into the suspension, not much the engine and it dyno'ed @ 383Whp

for the rest of you gays

My mom's brand spankin' new 2013 ford explorer w/ premium sport package has a very interesting, 365 bhp 3.5l ecoboost v6, and 6 speed automatic w/ auto-manual... but the damn thing wieghs gross 6,180; 4,700 completely dry and empty.
My bronco is a 1,000 lbs. less, but has 100 less horsepower, with the same gas mileage.

However, the explorer has way too much to access everything. Want to tow? You need to select a mode here, switch there. bla bla bla.

Going camping in the woods? Better select off-road mode... well crap, no wonder we arent getting very far, we accidentally selected sand mode.

Rain sense is annoying if you run into sprinkler over spray.

The dash is ten miles long.

im 24 god damn years old and the computers in it bother the living **** out of me.

I <3 my japanese muscle

But for DD i drive a "champagne" 1996 lexus ES300, for its creature comforts and ride.

My miata is just the toy atm, since its hard to go anywhere without taking the kids.
