its not that modern cars necessarily have more power, its the amount of crap you have to do to access said power. A 140hp 1970's model vehicle is going to feel more responsive and quicker than a 140hp 2013 vehicle due to the lack of sensors, emissions, "green" conscious and extra bullshit. Remove the smog pump, install a hotter coil and wiring, advance the timing, and raise the fuel on a carb v8 and you gain a significant amount of power vs. the modern.

I've always been amazed that they could actually get such little power out of a V8 engine. That's like running Hoover Dam at full capacity and only being able to power a coffee maker.
