Decided to find the video of my old roommate doing some crop dusting. 90mph, 8ft off the ground. He was saying how he has to go under power lines and also does this at night with only 3 giant spotlights to see anything. They refill the chemicals off the truck. Another job he was looking at was trimming trees from power lines, basically hanging a giant saw from the helicopter and flying right next to the lines.

Not him:

Well in that case "That is pushing the envelope in the way that the term was originally used in reference to exploring the boundaries of a helicopters auto-rotation envelope."

in other words, not literally.

here is chuck yeager preparing to get his photo taken sometime around the time he figuratively pushed the envelope:

X-15 was bawse

On a related note. I watched a really good documentary series on netflix called "When we left earth". The first couple episodes were about Gemini and Apollo. I highly recommend.

What the heck was the rear landing gear on that thing? I couldn't tell if it was just skids or some kind of "feet" with a bunch of really small wheels incorporated into them. Did it slide, or did it roll? :dunno:

Since it was only ever intended to operate experimentally, and principally on dry lake beds, the rear gear was nothing more than a pair of steel skids. This was done to save weight and space. You can see better detail in this high-resolution image:

After landing, a ground crew jacked up the rear end, retracted the skids, and lowered the airplane down onto a detachable wheeled dolly:
