That is a great time.

I really got into running after college. At my best a few years ago I was running 6:50~6:40 miles, and around 21.20' 5 k's. Also was running 1hr 40 minute halfs at around 8 minute miles.

I've gotten out of shape and am back at 7:50 miles. (Really hurt my ankle and IT band + gradschool)

Do not run in nikes. They are horrible, Bill bower must be rolling over in his grave. http://www.brooksrunning.com/ best fit and selection by far.

Also get rid of the five finger crap and get real shoes. There is a reason why very few marathoners/sprinters/etc still run barefoot.

I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. My buddy still pulls of 17~18 min 5K's like nothing.

Yeah, instead they wear racing flats. Not exactly Brooks Beasts.

Good work thridgen! I used to run cross country in high school (every race is 5k) and that would be a varsity time (top ten) on our team which was pretty good. Real close to what I would run if not the same actually. Also good call on slowing your pace at the start instead of eating it later on.

Now, try one out with lots of hills. Your time and strategy might be quite different!

Look into asics or mizuno for a good set of shoes. I've had really good luck with both. Keep in mind quality running shoes aren't cheap either. You want some cushioning but not fluffy plushy stuff either for the distance you're doing.

Me in High School (standing - middle). State champ, bad *** runner, sub 15:00 5Ks and tons of records and stuff, 125 lbs:

Me now (back). Huge gut, 185 lbs, no longer run (bad back, bad hips, bad knees):

I'm not sure if running 3X per day attributed to my joint/back pain or not. I did lose about 40 pounds at one point and was back to jogging several times per week but the pain was so bad that I quit again (and gained back all the weight). I loved running and the runner's high I would get from it. You are lucky to be able to run fast like that (or even at all).

Brooks mobile site is crap, can't tell what you're trying to link to.

I go barefoot or wear VFF's for short runs, and wear Saucony Grid Type A4's for longer runs.
