Anybody know much about Greenville, SC?
Another question about a far away land I am considering moving to in the next few years. The other was Portland, but I'm not sure I want to move that far away from family and friends. Birmingham is a sinking ship with a failing economy, no good jobs, crime, abandoned downtown area, poor decision making by local officials, high taxes, much more **** to complain about, so I just want out. The only somewhat local "big" city I have come across that I like is Greenville. Similar in size and feel to Birmingham, just not run down. Beautiful city, a place you could walk around comfortably and not fear being shot or robbed. Plenty of places to eat, a local brewery, seems to be a fairly lively small "big" town. They have a pretty impressive list of companies, Lockheed Martin, BMW, 3M, Honeywell, GE to name a few. Plenty of places my education may pay off, because there surely isn't **** in Birmingham besides school districts and a few small companies, private practices, ect.
I also like Greenville since it is located nicely for me to be able to see my family in Charlotte and Atlanta a bit easier. From Birmingham to Charlotte it's about a 7-8 hours drive one way. Too long to make it more than once every few years. Anyway, anybody from Greenville, or have family there, or at least visited a few times in the last few years since the major downtown and Falls Park renovations? I'm going to make a trip up there in the springs and stay a few days and see how I like it.

Do you have anything against Huntsville? I was living at Redstone for ~7 months and loved the area. Definitely not being hit as hard by the economy as most places. Don't realyl know much about Greenville, but if you're trying to get away from Bama all together checking out Charlottesville, VA might be worth a shot for you. My home town, lots of medium-sized businesses, plenty of stuff to do in the summer, etc..

Its not a bad place, I have family down there and a few of our customers are from Greenville/Spartanburg area and come up (essentially to Charlotte) to get stuff done so its definitely not a long haul at all.
I haven't been downtown in probably 3-4 years though.

I will be into computer networking/IT/ whatever in the computer field I get hired for. Not completely limited to computers, I have other skills as well, but would like to put my current college education to good use.
I love the climate of Charlotte. Still warm, but when I was up there for July 4th this year, it was hot but a dry heat with a breeze. It felt amazing. I would imagine being only 100 miles south, Greenville are would be similar, at least a little cooler than central Alabama. Huntsville is OK, but I would really like to leave Alabama all together if I'm going to be moving more than 30-40 miles. I'm bored with this scenery, been here my whole life.
Some pictures of the recent downtown area.
Just looks like a place I would like to settle down. Of course I will know more for sure when I visit in a few months.

I live there... What you need to know? But Greenville is awesome in my opinion... If you like to go out to bars and such at night there are PLENTY to choose from. They are always having events downtown and like you said, you are pretty much half-way between Charlotte and Atlanta. There is also GSP International Airport right off I-85 too so you don't have to drive to Charlotte or ATL to catch a plane. Also, there are two breweries local. One is right in down town and the other is on the outskirts. There is also one in Spartanburg, SC just up I-85N.
Also, if local breweries is your thing, Asheville, NC is just up I-26 and they have something like 8 local breweries in town. I plan to make a trip soon and go brewery hopping.
