I'd like to store the Miata in the garage above another car as I won't drive it much during the winter months here in MD. It would be nice for a convenient oil change station too.

I would recommend a 2 post lift if you think you may be doing any sort of automotive work on it. A 4 post really limits you.

 

My problem with 2 posts is they need concrete work and usually have higher posts which might limit me. As for work, the only thing I'm really limited in w/ a 4 post is brake and suspension work, which I'm fine doing on the ground as I'm not on my back under the car. From my understanding 2 posts aren't good for storage as the let the suspension sag.

My uncle used to own a company that built trailers with a lift system for a moble oil change company. drive the car up, lift it, walk below to change oil.. They also made a model that you drove on it, lifted it, then could park another car below.. was good for storing cars one above the other. I wish i had pics

 

You're really limited in a standard garage by ceiling height. See what you have (with the door in the raised position). You might be able to use a 4 post lift for storage, but it will probably be awful to have to work under it. Unless you're a hobbit.

A requirement for the next house is 15' ceiling height in the (hopefully detached) garage.

 

yep- most residental garage floors will only support 4 posts. I'm making sure I've got the right floor for a two post in the new garage. That 4 post looks like my buddy's and he loves it. He said you can put the car on stands (provided for that purpose with the lift) so the car has "similar" access as two post (or more like four stands on the ground). He parks one miata under the other in a standard ceiling height garage.

 

It really doesn't limit you if you use your brain.

that's a fantastic garage upgrade with a budget price. Something I need since I dont have a 3 car garage. Not in the mood to calculate the min height requirement, but I have a 9ft high ceiling.

 

I would be really careful parking under that thing not to hit one of the posts ... in the miata you would die

 

My garage is deep so the other car would only have the nose under the raised car (Miata).

I know I can use the jack on the 4 post. This also comes with the support for a jack or has it available separately.

As for height under the door, when working on the car I can always wheel the lift outside and raise the car to full height. It comes with dolleys.

Yep it has a caster kit.

Neighbor on one side of me is the head tech at a Baltimore BMW dealership so he does his car work at his job.

My other neighbor restores old musclecars and has a whole 3 car shop on the side of his house. The county fined him for building without a permit but he's also a lawyer with ties to the county so he got that hushed up real quick. I'd use his lift but he's always got 5 or 6 cars coming and going or up getting worked on. I gotta keep up with the Jones'. I do live in a cool court I must say.

I got 2 pillar style lifts from a shop that closed. $400 for the pair, and I picked them up.

 

that's similar to what my neighbor does with his two corvettes.
