Driving to work this morning I was rearended at a stoplight in my 01 Civic EX. At first glance the car looks virtually unscathed, despite the wreck feeling quite violent.
The bumper cover is mostly straight, but has a couple rips in it and the paint is fugged. The trunk was untouched in the accident but is pushed in and up at the rear window. When I popped the trunk (difficult) I could see more damage inside the trunk and there is no way in hell it's going to close again. It looks like some fairly substanital parts got bent, I'm praying to god that this POS is totaled as it's been nothing but nightmares since I bought it.
Car is an '01, 168k miles on it, KBB valued it at $3700. Please, tell me it's totaled, or at least that I've got a chance:
I think this is the $$$ part: Latch inside the trunk, you can see where the plastic is pushed in from bent frame.
I know the pictures suck, it was the best I could do at lunch with my shitty virgin mobile phone. I'll get some better ones when I get home.

Insurance has already been involved, determined the other driver to be at fault, and the car will be appraised Thursday morning. I'm just asking about potential repair costs and if there's any hope the thing will be totaled.
Your damage or the car's? The car will take a lot less typing.
I'd say it's toast unless there's something I'm missing. If the trunk lid is pushed in like that, the whole trunk area has been pushed in, and that's a lot in labor to fix. If $3700 is the value of the car, it's going to take more than half that to pull everything out, and they'll just total it.

I'm going to be so happy if they total the stupid thing. I just wasn't sure if I was being too optimistic.
You have no idea, I have had the most incredibly horrific luck the last 2 months that it's almost comical at this point.

Took some a better look at it when I got home today and I'm feeling more confident that it's not only totaled but almost unrepairable. The crash bar behind the bumper is broken in half and put some pretty good sized ripples through the bottom of the trunk and a crease in the passenger side of the body.
Broken sound deadening and ripples in the trunk:

Crease/bend in trunk:
Bottom of car:

Broken crash bar:

I'll let you guys know what they say.

My nephew's brand new (literally, less than 150 miles) Ford Focus had less damage and they totaled that. Crash was at about 15 MPH, and cosmetically, the car didn't look too bad. But the rear crumple zone had partially collapsed, and that was it.
Your car is toast.

I got the car appraised today and it was the craziest ****. The dude looks over the damage, put it in the computer, "NOT TOTALED!" WTF. They tell me there's $3882.86 worth of damage on the car I paid $1900 for 22 days ago and cut me a check for the repair, plus I got to keep the car. Hellls yeahhhhhh.
Anybody want to buy a civic?
Anybody want to buy a civic?
now fix it on the cheap... like a $300 painted bumper cover, and figuring out how to get the trunk lid to line up a little better, then sell the car.
welcome to the braineack way.
welcome to the braineack way.
So the next time it gets rear-ended the passengers in the backseat can die when it completely crumples. Oh ethics.
they can check the carfax, look in the trunk, and make the determination if the $$$ > benefit.
I would sell it and sleep very easy at night.
I mean it's a civic, it's going to crumble no matter -- hell, i was rear ended in my 2000 altima by a ford explorer going at least 40mph who barely braked before impact and my car looks much better..and that was the third time it was hit in such a manner.
