Coffee Crew: Who has the best, freshest beans commercially available?
#42
If you're telling me that you french press your coffee every morning 365 days a year then bravo, sir. Somehow I doubt it, but who knows, you are hustler.
That McDonalds case reveals the genius/evil of lawyers. They weren't sued b/c their coffee was too hot, they were sued b/c their cup did not inform their customer that it was hot and could cause burns, because most people don't know that.

Um, yeah. Fill up the pot, put it on the stove, grind the coffee, dump coffe into press-glass, put on cloths, pour boiling water, pack gym back, snuggle with kitties, prepare oats and fruit, press coffee into mug and car-mug...win at life. Every day.

**** that french press nonsense. I like my coffee filtered of sediment.
I almost lost my mind drinking coffee in Bali. They grind the beans in a mortar and pestle and then put them in your cup and fill it with hot water. And you drink it. And then you get to the bottom and it's this overextracted slurry of squirty feces. And no it wasn't Kopi Luwak.
Plus I don't have a proper burr mill to attain ideal grind size.
Anyway... the Brazen I posted above self-calibrates to your altitude to maintain water temp within 1 degree (you can choose brew temp between 190 and 210F). You can also set a pre-soak time to allow the beans to bloom.
plus it has an auto timer and thermal carafe. that means coffee at 650am.

My favorite is a Birmingham local, Royal Cup. their coffee is used by a lot of local gas stations and truck stops, but I'm not sure how far out their distribution goes. I'm pretty sure you can buy it online. It's not top end gormet ****, but for a good quick coffee, it beats anything you can buy in your local chain store by leaps and bounds.

I get beans delivered by Tonx. Very very happy with the beans, and you can't beat the convenience.
Good beans are useless without proper coffee prep. Burr grinder (I use a Baratza Virtuoso) gives uniform grind so you don't end up under/overextracting. Water temp is key, do not add boiling water, you want it 195-200Fish.
I use a variety of prep -- french press, pourover, aeropress -- but I think the aeropress gives the best results at home. Also, grind size depends on prep style. Coarse for frenchpress & pourover, medium for aero. And don't brew too long. 6 min w/ french press is enough, 4min pourover, 2min with aeropress.

I love the New Mexico roast they sell at the local trader joes here.
You've gotta send me some of this, lol.
I got all you ladies beat. Local roaster Colorado Coffee Merchants, sold under the Umpire Estate label. Best I've ever had. I ship it to my sister overseas. Drinking a cup of Guatemalan right now. They are picky as hell about beans, won't carry specific varietals unless the beans are up to snuff, and the only decaf roast I have ever thought was good (if that matters to you).
Edit: They date the bags according to when the beans were roasted. Never seen/bought one more than 5 days old, keep it frozen and it's as good as fresh for a couple of weeks.

Using a blade "grinder" with a french press is probably the most common issue. A burr grinder will get you larger chunks that dont cause problems with the screen and extraction.
Anyone else use an AeroPress ever? I go inverted method. It's solid. Very smooth cup.
