I was away from my place the last two days and left my computer running (or i guess I must have). So i go back today and while im messin with stuff it shuts itself, then turns back on, then shuts off ... over and over. There was no post by the motherboard or anything, as in the monitor is not recieving a signal at all. I am hooked up to a surge protector, so i dont think a spike would have done this, however there was quite a bit of that dust bunny **** in there and maybe the processor got too hot? I pulled it out and theres no visible signs of any damage for whatever that is worth.

My guess is that it is a fuxxord power supply?

 

does it do it in the same place every time? what if you boot into safe mode? will it stay on then?

 

motherboard does not post at all, blank screen. So no safemode.

 

whoops, yeah i missed that part sorry. have you tried pulling any peripheral cards (sound card, NIC, modem, etc.)? Also reseat your memory. Shut the computer all the way down, pull the plug, turn it back on (to discharge any energy left in the capacitors in the powersupply) and then plug it back in and turn it on fo' realz.

You may also find it prudent to clear your CMOS (usually accomplished by a jumper on the motherboard. refer to your manual for specific instructions.)

 

aight, ill give that shizzle a shot, not quite sure how to reset the cmos settings though.

 

What kind of computer? We had an issue with some dell optiplex's that would do similar things. It turns out that the dell PSUs are pretty much Fuxxed from the get go. Does the circuit you have it on have a ton of **** on it? If so surge protector or not, the processor will struggle on low amps and basically meltdown

 

CMOS battery, overheating, bad PS, bad fans, short....

 

No post? No BIOS beeps?

Start -- PS probably. I've seen them go up in smoke ... usually just dies when one of the caps blows. ANy drives spinning up?

Board cap, possible.... not likely... but still possible.
Fans -- make sure they are all running, otherwise, overheating chip is possible. -- may toast the chip too. <G>
