Maybe we do agree on alot then, but I have alot of confidence in my ability to apply copious amounts of elbow grease. The point is to clean, clean, clean, and then clean again. When you think you are finally done then you need to clean again. On an engine build I normally go through a minimum of 2 boxes of plastic gloves because I change them all the time just to keep from "cross contaminating", much like you are supposed to do when you work at a restaurant. I have brushes of all shapes and sizes and I am able to clean into every nook and cranny before final assembly. Another tip is to use alot of plastic wrap to keep clean parts, well, clean.

Ummm!
And howsa 'bout them Rod Bearings. They most probably love to be trashed right off the bat! Nothin more fun then yankin the motor back out because you need to replace the Rod Bearings.
Although, in defense of this thread - Funny Cars and Rails don't get get much of a "Break - In" period. --- My guess is that those guys REALLY know what the **** they are doin.

Don't funny cars and top fuelers usually "lose" a cylinder or two at the end of the track, and expect to replace the rings after each run?

You put grease on all bearings when assembling a motor. The grease is made to withstand tremendous compression without giving way. This prevents metal on metal contact for the first few seconds until oil is delivered to the entire system. After that starting the car and giving it gas is the same as a motor with 200k on it.

As long as you have oil pressure, age/mileage is of little consequence when running a new motor.

what about pre-oilers then? surely the oil wouldn't be on the moving parts as much as when the motor was running, so startup after sitting a while would be risky since no oil is there when turning the key? no? then all cars should have pre-oilers but they don't

high end high hp cars do but they usualy run tighter tollerances the oil left as a film on our parts does the job just fine. if you are worried take a 21 mm socket and drill or what ever and turn the motor over to preoil it before the initial startup.
