Ive got a montero sport. Not the most fuel efficient vehicle in the world, but thats what the miata is for. Picked my 2000 up for $3800 in 2006. Super comfortable, and get something other than the base model and it doesn't look half bad either. Hauls 5, (a.k.a. 4) back seat drops down for extra cargo, pulls nice as long as you arent towing a yacht, and available in 4WD.

SC300 has 4 seats but IMO the back ones are only useful for children, or the vertically challenged. It's like most 2-door 4-seaters, the rear seats are more or less an afterthought. My dad still has the one he bought new in '92, though it now has a T3/T4, conservative 400+ whp tune, Getrag 6-spd and something like 3.3 gears. It's mostly a highway cruiser. Nice cars but not great for >2 people IMO.

Go ahead and say Audi one more goddamn time!
If you think you are broke now buy an Audi/VW and see how much Miata money you have left every month.
The trick is to buy something reliable that you could never ever see yourself customizing or thinking it was cool. THEN you won't spend money on it instead of your Miata. Do not divide your mental and financial focus. Ask me how I know. Ask me how many project vehicles I own and then ask me how many are finished. Then ask me if I am happy about owning five unfinished vehicles for so long. I am not.

DO NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT GET AN AUDI OR VW.
Ask me how mine is. Go ahead, ask me!
Seriously though, they are unfun, ugly, slow, uncomfortable money pits. At least me 02 A6 is. I can try and pull up a huge rant I made about the car if you want to show you what I"m talking about.

I drive a 2001 Accord. It will NOT get me laid. But it will be fairly quiet and comfortable during my shitty commute, get decent mileage and be completely reliable. I sold an '02 GTI 1.8T that was fun to drive when I wasn't pissed off at it for POS construction and electrics, to get the Accord. I'm not sorry.

A lot of the suggestions have been either way out of budget or cars that simply lack practicality.
If you truly want something pretty fun to drive that offers a ton of utility, forget about vanity. Subaru Outback Sports (my preference is the '99-'01s) can be found for $5,000 or less with decent mileage. Plus, you can rallycross it.
