Default Drag Guru's! We need a sensei!

I hit the drags for the 1st time in my life last night. Key to the fast times some of the really quick guys have is the launch. I was getting schooled off the line and then running down a lot of the guys I was up against. Would be back 5 or 6 lengths and finish back 1 or 2.

School us mortals! What do you do to get under 2 second 60' times?!? There are a couple of guys here on street tires doing it. They haven't blown up the diff. They aren't on drag slicks or radials, yet are posting monster 60' times.

Teach us! We are ready to learn! With all the interest here in drags lately I'm sure there are a bunch who can benefit.

i know nothing about drag races. other than if you're starting to launch when the light turns green you've already lost.

You don't need good 60 foot times, you need more turbo (or cowbell). I could chase down all sorts of **** and it's funny when they think they've owned you off the line only to see you pullin' them like a freight train in the last 1/8 mile.

interested in this thread...Id assume responses will be drag radials, good tranny/diff mounts, etc

And let's not forget the suspension loading up the rear end to keep the power to ground w/o wheel spin.

dont just drop the clutch, you have to slip it off the line, ie:slow drop

I went 11.0X in my Miata so let me try and share my learnings..

- Drag Radials are a must if you are serious about Drag Racing.
- 8-10psi in the tires, prior to a smokeful burnout
- 6500 Rpm at launch with a slip of the clutch while pushing the gas down more.

- If you have launch control use it!!

- I/ve gone 1.9 60ft with a street tire, but it is not easy, pretty or good for your axles and diff due to wheel hop.

DRAG RADIALS or even a 22 or 23" Tall full drag slick are your friend. If you must use a non drag tire I would say a Toyo RA1 is okay!

I'm thinking about designing a traction bar setup to help with Wheel Hop. We have a bunch built for our Honda's (Http://www.etdracing.com) and I'm thinking about testing some on my Miata.

A cheater method with a standard is to apply the e-brake and put a little load on the clutch to get car to squat. Same principal as a trans brake for automatic. Have seen a few Autocrossers using this method for drag starts with tree type starts.

This was my best run. No slicks for me! Too many diffs exploding around here. This car is my daily driver. Don't need it out of commission for launching to hard!

1st run was a humbling 14.7. Got consistently better after that but never better than a 2.25 60'. Back end was doing the bunny hop and I was a little too jazzed to slip the clutch properly to prevent it.

Had no idea how much not being able to hear my car hurts my driving. Everything out there was a loud v8. I couldn't hear anything from my car. Without the sound feedback driving is a hell of a lot tougher.

First ditch the rear sway bar... It's not helping!

You need more turbo though... Makes a big difference! load up on some VP C10 unleaded and turn the boost up.

you have a MSPNP; ditch the rear bar, take the tires to about 20psi and use launch control

Again, daily driver. I'm a little concerned about my turning up the boost yet. Wanna get the new bushings in and see if that help with the hop. Good advice on dumping the rear sway. Hadn't thought of that. Gotta practice launching without being able to hear the car.

I've got the launch control but I have to say it seems a little like cheating to me! It doesn't seem quite as manly to have your car revving itself and we already have enough issues with manliness driving Miata's!

Have to say when I 1st showed up, mine was pretty much the only import (other than a 16.9 second dial saab) No one was really approaching me. After a few runs it was "hey, what ya running there. That's one of those Mazda's aint it? What'd ya do to that thing !?!"
