The story cant be worded any worse "the miata slammed head on into the taxi" How about looking at the damage? The front bumper of the miata is unscratched. Its clear that the miata was sideways and the taxi hit the miata head on, not the other way around.

To me it looks like it was a right turn and the miatas rear end sliding into the oncoming traffic?

Maybe non-owner who was driving it drunk was hooning to impress the girl and hit the van sideways at great speed. Or maybe he was distracted and tried to correct when he found himself heading into a vehicle coming from the other direction and ended up sideways just before impact. Either way he hit hard as fuck.
