They can get jobs in the factories which would then be making the more efficient cars to which johndoe refers.

And thats gonna happen overnight right? I guess in the meantime we'll just take care of them thru increased taxes because of increased unemployment.

The more efficient vehicles will be made somewhere outside of this country.

PS, ask your Senator why we aren't getting any of that oil they found in North Dakota!

tree hugging **** liberals. and north dakotan polar bears.

I'm pretty sure you made both those up.

Really the argument against SUVs has less to do with their specific gas consumption as it does with their being identified as a sign of prosperity and security. They're more than most people need. Why waste all that steel and fuel just to satisfy your insecurity?

I've always believed that the original H1 hummer had more right to be for sale than the H2 or H3 ever did. Why? Because no soccer mom will ever own one. They are a serious vehicle and have no business being a grocery getter.

Now this is a thought about SUV's that I agree with.

These cute utility vehicles not only waste gas and promote a false sense of security, they present an unbelievably lame facade of prosperity.

Real Humvees cost real money. But people are buying H2's and H3's thinking they're status symbols like Hummers were. But they're just glorified Silverados with body kits.

Don't even get me started on the shitbags in their Torrents and Vues.

An H3 gets 20mpg, not great but respectable. Try an expedition or an excursion with their 20 person capacity and what 10mpg coasting downhill? H2's shouldn't even be sold, they have no practical use other than to consume as much fuel as possible, oh and the profit margin for gm I suppose.

So basically you think people who own suv' think their better than you? I guess you feel the same abut BMW and Cadillac owners. FYI I used to have a Torrent and I now have an Expedition so I guess you must really think im a shitbag.

Not that they think they're better than me, just that they think these ridiculous vehicles are status symbols. It's conspicuous consumerism, aka goods of ostentation. Except these cute-utes are not ostentatious in the least because they cost no more than a typical Saturn sedan.

A guy I know used to say things like:
"The wife and I went to <somewhere>. We took the SUV."

Until one day I said "When did you get an SUV? I thought you had a G6 and a Torrent"." Took the wind right out of his sails. Heh.

BMW's and Caddies are actually nice cars. Unless we're talking about their SUV's which are just ridiculous.

WTF?!? Aside from the access to neat cars, that's just about the most retarded thing I've read in this thread about pricey oil. Have you even looked at what gas costs in the UK? Last I checked it was north of $8-9/gallon, and not that much different in neighboring countries.

I always worry about people not paying attention in suv's / 5000lb vehicles. My daily miata gets like 26mpg, so I'm not really all that bothered by fuel prices.

How so. That comment has more to do than with just stupid fuel prices.

Huh?

I have an '07 Vue V6. I can tow reasonable (3500lb) loads, fit a ton of crap inside, and get ~30mpg on the freeway, and paid a quite reasonable amount. How is that a bad thing?

I didn't get it to be ostentatious, to feel better about myself, or any of the mumbo-jumbo being spouted off. I got it because it has all the utility I want without the excess.

I find it pretty ludicrous that a bunch of guys who have thrown a turbo on their car are trying to set the bar on fuel and consumer responsibility Give me a break people.

I rather enjoyed the fact that people are spouting off about conspicuous consumption while they drive a 2 seater convertible sports car.

With a typical NA's blue book value being roughly equivalent to a whopping 3 months worth of Escalade lease payments?

I guess it's consipicuous, but it sure as hell isn't going to impress anybody.

we're not talking about saturn vue, toyota rav4 or honda CRV utes. most of those are just compact cars with big bodies. i have no problem with that. I support that.

it just seems silly for a single driver to commute 50 miles a day in a 6000 lb car. i dont mind people *owning* them. take it on dates. drive off road. whatever you like to do.

but with the price of gas where it is, it'd be cheaper to keep the 10mpg SUV for fun-only trips and lease a 45mpg SMART to commute in.

$4 gas @ 10mpg x 50 miles a day x 20 work days = $400.00
$4 gas @ 45mpg x 50 miles a day x 20 work days + 275/mo payment = $363.80

score. and you can park the smart in the SUV in the garage.
