Help me catch this guy... video surveillance!
I live on base... generally awesome housing, big yards, huge trees, brand new playgrounds, quiet and secure. Some kid around here has gotten bored and started opening gates. It's turning into an issue... he seems to be targeting yards with dogs. It's a problem.
We got hit sometime this morning between 8am and 9am. I let the dogs out to take a **** and clean up the morning mess. I walked right by the gate several time and would have noticed if it was open. Around 0930, one of the neighbors brought the dogs back as they were out running in the street.
I was thinking remote camera, audible alarm, trap-door-punji-stick-pit, napalm strike.
My favorite is a stealthy camera install in the tree.
Decent illuminated outdoor bullet camera:

The cameras can be had everywhere and aren't really the hard part. Getting power out to the camera and the signal back to the house is easy with extension cables. I could also go wireless.
BUT... what's the DIY method for recording? I've got portable hard-drives and spare laptop's. My desktop stays on 24/7, so I could plug in a portable HD and record through the desktop. I'd love to do it through a USB port so I don't have to add a dedicated video card. A dedicated Video Surveillance DVR is about $125.
I was thinking about something like this but can't find a name-brand device with a decent rep: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7BBTkwCjCECjCE
Anybody else into 007 ****?

I've recently been looking into a camera solution myself for down at the shop. Its probably a bit overkill for what you need, but this is one of the systems I might get.
It comes with the DVR unit and 4 cameras.

Damn... even with all my use over the years of hunting camera's, that hadn't even entered thought. It's perfect... fully remote, batteries last forever...
Most of them are the size of a damned bookshelf speaker because they don't have to be stealth. If you went out and hid them from the animals, then you probably shouldn't be allowed near firearms.
I need to find a small one that will go up on a tree branch. I need it to shoot down onto the area outside the fence.

^Yah, I know... but **** that. I shouldn't have to lock my gate because some ******* kid doesn't get enough attention from mommy and daddy. If I lived out in town, I'd remove the little piece of hemp that you pull on to open the gate and replace it with a piece of wire... and hook it up to a a ******* light socket.
But this is on base... people around here are supposed to be a little more reliable. Plus, there was some graffiti in the new $80k park behind my house that I had to go scrub off, and I'd love to catch the ****** with a few magic markers in his pocket.

By the time you read this, My CPU will have been terminated.
My brother is 007. He is (was) a rogue specialist who was sworn to protect the preservation of the Aryan race, which would be protected by the machines...(cyberdyne systems model 101's).

^That plus the camera.
That way if you're around when he does it you'll be able to chase him down and tackle him with one arm, then reach into your pocket with your other arm and... "bleep bleep". Your badassery will be caught on tape too! Freedom of speech is not free if it presents a clear and present danger of dog attack.
