Needing internet modem advice.

What do you guys currently use, and what is your ISP. My new place ONLY gets TWC(Spectrum) service and their current single package of *up too* 100/10mb doesn't sit well with me as there use to be a 300 down option. No fiber available. I've looked into if there are any other providers, and if spectrum plans on offering higher packages. Looks like a nope and maybe soon-ish--whenever.

So, I was hoping to future proof and get a newer model of modem. I'm sure my old motorola surfboard has now become outdated.

Looking at the Arris SB6190 or possible the Netgear CM700 - Very similar specs, Arris is cheaper on Amazon currently. Arris may have a vulnerability .

 

Just curious, do you guys have a bandwith quota?

 

Our current package is a 16 Mb/sec, with unlimited bandwith but the ISP slows it down to 3 Mb if you exceed 100 GB during one billing cycle.
They then bring it up to normal speed (about 14 Mb in real life conditions) on the first of the next month.

It usually takes us 15-16 days to hit 100 GB.

We are paying about $20 US for that service.

 

Unlimited, not sure if I will be throttled after a certain limit. I plan on using a vpn service.

$40 USD for 100MB/sec with current package for when I sign up. Will probably go up in cost after 2 years.

 

$70 for 50mb service, throttle doesn't start until somewhere around 300GB per month.

 

I pay $109.95 for 50/20 cable internet from Comcast. I am on a business account though which is why it costs more. I went with business due to having no data caps, and slightly better SLA's. Overall I have not had any price increases in 3 years and have had overall decent service.

 

I have the same. They supplied a Cisco gateway. I don't know about any issues with it, but then I put it in bridge mode pretty much immediately.

 

$30 for 17/0.8 Mb 'broadband'. UK is aids when it comes to internet. Don't come here. The only upside is we haven't had any downtime in since April.

CM600 it is, should be a-plenty for my use anyways

 

If I wanted a static IP I had to rent a modem/router from them. It was $6 extra a month for the modem/router and then $8 a month for the static IP. I choose to just use my own modem that I owned. My IP has changed twice in the past 3 years and DDNS on my router has handled it perfectly.

 

Any ideas on a modem that also has integrated VOIP capabilities? It seems the reason most of the providers want you to opt for a 3 way bundle is to lock you into the equipment. I use Vonage now but could reduce my rate if I went to a bundle and fight with them in 12 months again after the "plan" goes up.

At least we have the option of pitting TWC against the local Bell.

 

I do not. At least with Comcast they told me if I used them for VOIP that I had to get their modem/router and use that. As it was the only thing that works with their VOIP system. I don't need a home phone, so I laughed.

I am jealous that you at least have an alternative. I can get AT&T DSL, but I think 10MB was the max speed they could get me. That is just not acceptable for me. I was pissed when I learned my house is about 2 miles outside of where a local telecom has fiber. Had I realized that when I bought my house, I would have probably picked a different one that had fiber as an option.

 

Serious question:

What the heck are you guys doing, for which 10 Mb/s down isn't adequate?

 

1080p streaming on multiple devices.

 

I dislike waiting for downloads. Wouldn't mind a higher upstream for HD twitch streaming in the future.

 

I recently got fiber optic, from a company called Greenlight. $50 a month for 50Mb/s. No taxes, fees, rentals or hidden charges. It's been nearly flawless, and we've had multiple devices all streaming simultaneously with no lag or interruptions. Asus dark knight router handles it all with no drama and without having to reset, which was becoming a common (at least weekly) requirement using cable.
