I've never understood this. Turning is the process of removing material from the outer diameter. But how come all lathe operations also fall under "turning". Even though it's not proper English, I always say turning, facing, and boring are operations and that "lathing" is performing any of these operations.

I've heard people say "turn it on the lathe." I presume this is correct manufacturing lingo? The process of turning occurs on the lathe.

It probably depends on how big they are and how fast you want to turn them.

I've never heard anyone say the word lathing ever. It's always turn, bore, face etc.

I also need to get off of this site before I dig out the half complete pile of turbo parts in my garage and get stupid ideas.

Dem 9s.... Perfect chip. I want to see the insert.

Aidan doesnt even recall that I have been using the verb form of lathe, or lathed in casual conversation with him as a joke for over a year.

Good troll is good.

Pics and hopefully vid in a moment. Can't show the forging shop as that's the core of the business. Steel mill rolls (hot side) pretty much destined 80% to China. Insert is 50mm long with 3mm corner radius and depth of cut on roughing passes are usually at full depth (47mm) X 2.0" Feed/Rev.

Part material is all HSS.

Coming out of the annealing oven. 60" Diameter x 17' long.

60" forging on lathe 500hp

OD Roughed @ 52", now to turn journals.

Misc forgings/rough turned rolls.

60" roll on 100 ton hoist

All times are GMT -4. The time now is 12:59 PM.
