I discovered a new band today. The Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata. (Thank you, NPR Weekend Edition.) Basically, they've re-imagined Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, projecting it through the lens of Rock and Roll, and covering a massive gamut of music styles. Listen closely, and you'll hear homages to BB King, Skynard, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Jackson Five, the Beach Boys, Bob Marley, AC/DC, Steve Miller, Kiss, Credence, Aerosmith, Boston,... well... everything.

Listen free to full album here: http://www.brooklyn-ro.com/music.html

If you like Mannheim Steamroller, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the East Village Opera Company, you will love Brooklyn Rundfunk. The hills are alive... with funky music.

(Don't skip ahead on this first one or you'll miss a whole genre. It turns into pure awesome at 0:55, and keeps getting better. At 4:02, the coolant boils away, causing a total meltdown and releasing radioactive awesome directly into the atmosphere.)

(Well, you can skip the parts where the dude's voice is 180° out of phase. I can't believe they let that slip through.)

got my first flat tire last night. Hit a pretty minor pothole by MA standards and shredded my right rear sidewall. I think the front right tire might be toast too as it was nearly flat by the time I got home.

I've never been a massive fan of Taymor's work, to be honest. It's not bad, in fact, she's a very talented director. But her work isn't particularly revolutionary.

BRO, by comparison, is a paradigm shift. They are, first and foremost, a rock band, and they make no claims to the contrary. If you go to one of their shows, you're not going to see much in the way of stagecraft. Instead, they are doing for the 20'th century American musical theater genre what Wendy Carlos and TSO did for the great German composers of the 18th century. They're taking the blueprints for great (but dated) music and re-interpreting them in a way which is relevant and exciting for a contemporary audience.

I've had the Jackson-Five-styled rendition of "Do-Re-Mi" stuck in my head for two days now, and the sound of Julie Andrews sporting an afro feels good.

Well, since we're talking about alternate versions of well known songs we heard on public broadcasting stations, I just heard this interesting version of a popular rock song on a listener-supported station in Gainesville, FL:

Don't you hate that ****. I go through at LEAST 2 tires a year around here from sidewall failures from potholes. Especially after the exceptionally cold winter we had with 4 or 5 snow storms that kept the roads in a constant freeze and thaw cycle. Now a lot of roads that were bad have completely gone to **** and crumbled almost into gravel at some spots. But no, we can't have a lottery to have good schools and nice roads like our neighbors to the south and east.

The cake is a lie!

We have a lottery that was sold to the citizenry as a supplement to the publik skool budgets. After enacted, the money appropriated to the school systems from the general funds by the legislature was reduced by the same amount as the lottery contributed. Zero sum gain to the schools and a big ******* plus to the money in the general fund. Therefore, the lottery is just an additional tax on stupid people (including me on rare occasions). The politicians win and get a back-door tax increase.

Yeah, I guess it is up to the politicians as to where it goes. At least I know it works for roads in Georgia. Cross the state line from AL to GA and it goes from beaten wagon trail to smooth as glass.

**** yeah, ebay!!! Stand to make another $700 in the next few days if it all sells like I'm confident it will. How the **** did I never give this ebay selling thing a try. So much **** sitting around that I don't use that other people would pay out the *** for. Hopefully next week I can get my other rotary engine torn down and sell the internals for premium. Just the rotor housings in good shape go for about $200 each. Set of matching rotors another $150, irons ~$80 each, e-shaft another $50. Gold mine!

New York trivia:

In the video of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" which I embedded above, which subway line is TK Wonder riding on?
