The mic didn't like that horn.

What happens when you put 24v onto a 12v car horn? Does the smoke come out?

Joe Perez 11-24-2020 03:58 PM

Dammit, now I've got Chelsea Dagger (the goal song) stuck in my head.

I've never tried it, but my understand is that, if it uses signed integers, the horn will actually wrap around past "loud" and actually start to consume sound.

Panel mount alarm, found on McMaster. Louder than you think, and cheap. Some of them come with flashing lights.

Yeah,

It wasn't actually meant to be a serious question. The "sound of a dying giraffe" quote floated through my head while filtering results, and I kinda wanted to make a little joke about it here.

Of course, I could go the other way, and steal the Blackhawks' goal horn from the United Center arena. It is a maritime horn, like from a ship. "There are no louder horns on earth used in any sort of commercial service," according to the manufacturer, Kahlenberg Air Horns.

It is noticeable.

I can attest to the fact the Kahlenberg makes loud horns (point of fact, they are called whistles on ship). Especially when numb-nuts designers have them mounted directly to the deck house on the flying bridge (instead of up in the air on a mast, preferably on the other end of the vessel, like God intended). Even with two deck separation between said horn and my rack, the noise and vibration comes through the steel quite clearly. It makes for somewhat less than restful sleep.

Hunting buddy tested positive for Covid. Wife, son and I are all sick, or at least were. Wife and I are well on our way to recovery, but son is just getting started. Wife went to get tested (they said only one of us needs to go) and I'm guessing quarantine is in the works.

Worst symptoms for me and the wife were the aches. I felt like my knees had been smashed with a club. I'm mostly over it, but only time will tell.

Joe Perez 11-27-2020 04:50 PM

Been a lot of that going around.

One of my guys at work tested positive last weekend. It was one of those deals where he does side-gigs (sporting events and such, which use mostly per-diem crews) and everyone working those crews has to get a negative test before each event.

Thankfully, doesn't seem to have been any secondary transmission in our shop, which honestly surprises me, given the number of shared tools.

Airborne transmission seems to be the main focus these days, hence masks. What was his work environment in that context, close working with others? Your work have a mask policy?

We have a mask policy anytime one is in a shared space. Compliance is fairly high.

A total of about 8 people share the construction dept. office throughout the course of a typical day, and this individual spends a lot of time in the tool room, the wire room, and the rack rooms as well. Probably comes into contact with about 30 people on a given shift.

This is only the second case in my department so far. The first one passed it on to his parents, both in their 80s, who subsequently died. That was early in the year.

Godless Commie 11-27-2020 05:58 PM

My sister tested positive about a week ago, and was "ordered to stay home" per the law over here.
She was very sick, and woke up perfectly fine on the morning of day 5.
That is exactly what happened to me as well, although I never bothered to get tested.

Someone on my production line died from the rona early this spring. Other than that, no fatalities in the building. But last time someone dropped a deuce in the stairwell, it only took a VP like 5 days to get someone to clean it up, so I'm pretty sure it's a total clean room now. Someone really made a savy call by converting the biggest building on earth to trouble-ticket only janitorial service.

❤️ Thanks Hakan. We really wanted to throw the party we had planned, but life has a way of messing with plans.

Also, I quite enjoy Brutalist architecture. It pleases me that the designer didn't try to soften this building with rounded edges, but rather embraces the fact that inside this building, humans will judge other humans, often harshly, and as such the gravity of the building reflects the gravity of the situation.

About once every two weeks, I get a call from "Steve from Canadian Online Pharmacy."

Steve always calls from a different spoofed number, but I'm pretty sure it's always the same guy.

Also, I'm fairly certain that "Steve" lives in either Mumbai, New Delhi, or Bangalore. Not Toronto or Lunenburg.

Today, I tried a different tactic. I asked him to describe himself. What is he wearing?

"Do you need to purchase any medications today?"

Tell me about your hair. Do you have long, thick hair?

"Sir, I am calling about your medications."

I can feel the skin of your cheeks. Warm, soft and supple. It's hot where you are now. I can taste the sweat on your skin.

He hung up.

If Steve calls back, I'm open to suggestions on how to up this game. I want to make him *afraid* to call me, even if it is on his queue.

Sister / mother stuff is ok. PM me if you feel uncomfortable posting in public.

Joe, you would like my mom...
Olan Mills (photographs) would call her and she would say just how much she wishes that she could have pictures of her family as they all died last night in a huge house fire.
She was trying to make the telemarketer cry, sometimes she was successful...
Once a Sears Salesman was trying to sell her a trash compactor that she didn't want.
He beat feet when she asked just how big a child would fit into the compactor. I was three and my sister was an infant, we were with her...

Please keep us updated on this. It would be nice if you could come up with a way to stop all the telemarketing crap without using the legal system.
You would be EVERYONE'S HERO !

I have a nice collection of switch blade knives. My pride and joy is a stag horn italian made 17" one. It's a monster knife! I ordered it just after 9/11. The crafty Italians wrapped it in tin foil to resemble a lobster cracker, and labeled it as one. No weapons were allowed to ship at that time, but my knife got through.

Sounds like your mother is quick thinking or plans ahead, she would also get along with my mother. After she divorced her second husband (UAW union president at Lordstown Ohio plant), we started to get more phone calls looking for him. After a few days my mother, brother and I started saying in a sad tone of voice, "he's no longer with us" and hanging up. Within a week or two the phone calls stopped.

A few years later I used that technique on Columbia House Records. My father and mother divorced when I was 4. He moved away and I never had a chance to get to know him before he died when I was 13. Columbia must have traced him through the family tree but he had never lived at the address, nor our previous address. "No he's not here, he has never lived here...he's dead, thanks for reopening the wound!" Click!

1 week short of 7 years (on a 6 year warranty) the water heater decided it was time to die. I have replaced the water heater in this house at least 3 times before this, so it should be a fairly straightforward process. Still, a pain in the ass.

Erat 12-14-2020 09:15 AM

My water heater has to be going on 20 years now.

And now that I said something my ass is gonna be without hot water and a huge mess Christmas morning, watch.

Joe Perez 12-14-2020 09:54 AM

Some places just have icky water.

Even the expensive all-stainless water heaters don't last all that long in Florida, for example. I'm sure that some here remember the moist and unpleasant saga of how I wound up with a nice epoxied garage floor back in 2009.

The unit I installed then failed about 5 years later.

wackbards 12-14-2020 10:09 AM

My T&P valve crapped out & flooded my basement after 6 years. That was an expensive $15 part.

They generally rust out at the bottom. Having a gas burner at the bottom of a glass lined steel tank rusts it out, and it eventually fails. That they fail at 7 years when the warranty is 6 speaks to just how carefully the manufacturers control the tank thickness.

First water heater in this house lasted 25 to 30 years. My first replacement lasted 10. Then 8, now 7. I expect this one will fail at midnight after 6 years and a day.

good2go 12-14-2020 11:59 AM

Have you tried replacing the anode? Once its sacrificial service life is depleted, the tank and fitting are on the death slide. Maybe doing so preemptively every couple years could help. They're inexpensive and much easier to replace than changing out the whole unit.

I'm not a doctor, but it seems like the physical trauma which would result may delay healing of the surgical wound, and possibly also result in other complications.

I think we have some console gamers on here. If you're like me, you've been looking at the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Zero, and thinking "Yeah, I guess they're ok. But what I really want in a game console is an integrated chicken-warmer."

Well, your prayers have been answered.

I first thought this was a joke. I really did. But multiple reliable sources claim that it is a real product.

Behold, the KFConsole:

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...548a77af60.png

The KFConsole is real, and it boasts one big advantage over the PS5 and Xbox Series X

By Adam Vjestica 14 hours ago

Yes, the KFC console exists.

Approved by Colonel Sanders himself, the KFConsole is here – and it finally solves a problem that literally no one cared about until now: how to keep your chicken warm while gaming.

The KFConsole, created in partnership with PC hardware manufacturer Cooler Master, promises to shake up the console war like a bag full of 11 herbs and spices with its built-in chicken chamber – a world’s first. It means the days of stomaching lukewarm poultry or suffering through a slightly cold piece of thigh are thankfully over. And it’s about time.
The KFC console was first teased back in June, and caused more commotion on social media than a fox entering a chicken coop. Demand, strangely, was high for a console from the long-running fast food chain, and well… here it is.

The KFConsole is designed to keep your freshly purchased food piping as you frag foes online, something which the PS5 and Xbox Series X simply can’t do (and we wouldn’t advise trying, either). The custom built cooling system extracts system heat around the outside of the chicken chamber, so the hardware stays suitably cool and your chicken stays warm.

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tP...70-80.jpg.webp

The Bargain-Bucket shaped machine is also capable of chewing through the latest games, too. While the specs are still firmly under wraps, the console promises to have a top-end Intel CPU inside, an ASUS hot swappable mini-GPU, and an NVMe 1TB SSD from Seagate.

It means that the KFC console can run Crysis and even Cyberpunk 2077 (bugs and all), as well as I Love You Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator at an impressive 4K, 240fps.

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/FZ...70-80.jpg.webp

The KFC console is a weird feat of human engineering, then, and exactly the kind of silly nonsense we need during this trying year. It reminds us of how Microsoft brought the Xbox Series X fridge meme to life (and how we can't help but want a mini fridge version).

Honestly, the KFConsole wouldn’t look out of place next to Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen systems – though the faint smell of chicken would certainly raise a few eyebrows.

Suspiciously, the console doesn’t have a release date, price or any nailed on technical specifications to share yet, although it does have a website. Nevertheless, we’re crossing our fingers that the Colonel delivers a consumer-ready product in the near future, as we’re unsure whether a heated chicken chamber would pass health and safety regulations.

While we'll have to wait and see whether the KFConsole actually makes it to market, if you're still searching where to buy PS5 or where to buy Xbox Series X, we're checking all the retailers for any new stock updates to help you secure the elusive systems as they continue to remain sold out, with stock flashing in and out.

The ATSC3 experiments are mostly being done in small markets, as there are extremely few TV sets compatible with the signal.

ATSC3, or at least the OFDM component of it, would have been awesome 20 years ago, when we first did the DTV conversion. Back then, there was an FCC mandate that all new TV sets be made compatible with the then-new ATSC signals, and there was a government-subsidy program to purchase set-top ATSC decoders for older TVs.

Today, there's none of that, and so manufacturer support for the standard is very low.

Sinclair and Scripps are both very excited about ATSC3, at a corporate level. My fear is that any TV station which switches to it is going to lose most of its OTA viewership. It's a great technology, but it's too late to do any good.

It's just targeted advertising, same as with every online content provider.

Frankly, it doesn't work at the moment. There's nothing wrong with the underlying tech, but the TV manufacturers aren't supporting it.

As it looked less and less certain that the current administration would be leaving the White House in 2021, Brad became morose, then despondent.
He was sick of the world -- of Covid-19, Brexit, Russian belligerence, global warming, racial tensions, and the rest of the disturbing stories that occupy media headlines.

Brad decided he'd had enough and said his goodbyes.

He drove his car into his garage and then sealed every doorway and window using plastic sheeting and duct tape. He got back into his car and wound down all the windows, selected his favorite radio station, started the car and revved it to a slow idle. Two days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car. She notified the emergency services and they broke in, pulling Brad from the car.

A little sip of water and, surprisingly, Brad was in perfect condition, but his Tesla had a dead battery.

Crown makes excellent pro audio amplifiers. Their D45 and D75 have been a de-facto standard in radio & TV stations for longer than I've worked in the business. Replace the pots and the capacitors once every decade or two, and then put 'em back in the rack.

I've never used any of their consumer gear. Looking at the back panel, it doesn't appear much different, apart from all of the connections being unbalanced.

Back before radio stations started caring about OSHA, we used to install D45s as headphone amps.

Joe Perez 01-10-2021 09:11 PM

I've been preparing to say "fuck you" to the company which installed the fire protection system at my transmitter suite at Hancock for some time. And this ain't some bit player. They're one of the big names in the Chicago fire protection market. But they're just smarmy as hell, and have a weaselly disposition about them.

Mind you: I pay them an annual contract to inspect, service, and maintain that system. It's one of those things that I just don't have time to deal with, so it's easier to pay someone else to worry about it for me. I have no problem with that. Me paying someone else to keep track of my fire protection systems is a totally legitimate business model.

The last inspection was last month. We paid for that inspection, as usual.

Last week, I get a report which says that the filter cartridge on the VESDA* system is expired, and needs to be replaced. $131 for the part, and $618 to install it.
.

* = fancy smoke-detector that draws air into a central unit with a pump from sampling-points all around the room, and shines a laser through it. It is, in seriousness, the best money can buy.
.

Now, to be clear, I don't give a shit about $618. I have spent more than that while taking a piss. Not kidding. Unzip, start the stream, phone rings, answer with left hand, hear description of problem, give an order on how to solve it, put phone away, stream ends, two shakes, tuck and zip. That was a $7k piss.

It's the principle of the matter. If you're going to try to fuck me, at least tell me that my hair is nice and soft, and that you like the color of my shirt, as well as how it fits me.

After my first email, which was phrased along the lines of "I think there may be an error on this quote. $618 to install a filter? Would you please check on this for me?" they replied back that service calls are a four hour minimum, but they will graciously cut that in half because they have a job in the building next week anyway.

After much deliberation, I sent them the following:
.

Eric, what's puzzling me is this:

[Company name] installed this system.

[Company name] has maintained / inspected this system since it was installed.

Given that the usable lifetime of these filters is known and documented, it seems that [Company name] should know, in advance, when it's time for one to be replaced.

So, I guess what I'm asking is whether [Company name] is not keeping track of the service-life of components in our system, or merely electing to send technicians out to perform inspections without them being equipped with the service parts which they know will need to be replaced?
.

Was that too much?

I don't feel like it was too much.
