I guess I was raised different. We don't take handouts, nor do we give them out. Earning extra cash (in my experience) comes by working MORE hours, not less.

I am trading additional money for time off in my case. I can't speak of anyone else on here, but I am pretty confident it's the same in their cases.

I have the ability to negotiate less time off - and earn more money. Or I can negotiate more time off, and earn less money.

Or, to put it more simply, the "paid" time off is merely taking the salary from days I earn, and putting that salary into my "paid" time off. Understand?

I understand how it works, but what I dont understand is why it even came about in the first place.

Why do people NEED paid time off? Why do these companies and corporations pay you guys to take the time off?

Say you want to take a 2 week vacation somewhere nice, why should Joe Blow Corp. pay you to? You feel sick and need to stay home for a day or two, why should you get paid for that?

Not trying to dog anyone really, I just think its part of the "lazy American" persona that we you give ourselves yourselves.

 

It's because studies have shown that time off from work actually makes you MORE productive. And since people woudln't get paid otherwise, they weren't taking off work. So as an incentive for people to take off they started doing paid time off.
