I'm considering this v2.5

The engine just had it...ever since it was put on (2005) there were oil leaks, consumption, major blow-by, smoke on cold starts, smoke after sitting for days, oily black deposits on the exhaust, etc.

Like you wouldn't have said the same...

Since you have an extra head, consider making it breathe

Braineack 06-15-2007 03:59 PM

blown headgasket on the is one....betcha the head is warped.

but I'll have my existing block to build; ill figure out a head down the road as well. Make my vanity plate mean something for realz.

hustler 06-15-2007 05:00 PM

did you make a coolant reroute flange? I need someone to fab one up for me.

Philip 06-15-2007 05:09 PM

oh, I thought this was a hustler thread then I came in to see actual WORK being done and discussed, well done sir.

That sounds like my engine minus the oil leaks.

what? on the NEW (old) motor hanging in 1st post? blown hg?

it's easy enough to check for a warped head...

and diy port it!

Braineack 06-16-2007 11:47 AM

yeah, the longblock I picked up, hanging there, has a blown headgasket. I'm just going to put my head on it.

I'm going to pull the head off it tomorrow and see how it looks. Right now my main goal is to get it running again. So I can just slap my head on and call it a day and reinstall, shoudn't take more than a few days work.

But if the head looks good I can easily do what I want with it and then swap it when it's done ;)

somwhere between 210-250rwhp

Nice motor!
Two stockers: one with blown rings, and one with a blwn head gasket? I'd hardly call either nice. :gay:

Arkmage 06-20-2007 05:07 PM

Dude... that looks like the result of a pressurized crankcase. does your pcv check out ok?

neogenesis2004 06-20-2007 05:18 PM

You do realize he is putting in a new shortblock because of this right? His rings are bad, so yes, his crankcase was pressurized.

:gay: :gay: :gay: :gay: :gay: I'm almost 100% positive that he checked that a long long time ago.

Oil this bad is the result of bad rings.

KEEP THE PICTURES COMING!!!! i enjoy seeing daily updates like this.

That's some funny shit!

jayc72 06-20-2007 05:42 PM

Scott,

You do know that if you didn't "correctly" route the PVC system you wouldn't have had oil in your intake? ;) Well you might have had a fire instead I guess :) :) :)

Good luck!

y8s 06-20-2007 06:03 PM

I envision Scott's PCV system like this:

large tube coming from compressor outlet going directly to oil filler cap hole.

probably wouldn't have been a bad idea.....

yeah, arkmage, i lost compression when the rings gave out. That's the aftermath. PCV valve held 5-10-15-20-30psi without a hitch when i put it on my air compressor.

Thanks for being the only one that didn't reply like an ass... some of use don't have boost and haven't seen that kind of oil build up from blow by + boost. I'm just ignorant and haven't had experience here yet.

yeah, pressurize crankcase looks like this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/braineack...yno_Day064.jpg

blown rings, at about 5k Tom's car just sprayed oil everywhere...im sure if my breather line wasn't attached into the intake mine would look the same....so instead i flooded the chamber and the car stalled.

Splitime 06-20-2007 11:18 PM

Heh, my last pressurized crankcase was just a case of frozen lines running into my catchcan... which I had run from VC and shortblock.... my turbo became the PCV... I felt like Spyhunter... it was awesome.

Braineack 06-21-2007 02:25 PM

made a bit of progress, didnt want to pull the turbo, but it was in the way to pull the P/S pump.

only a bit left and i can lift it.

oh and major discovery, my stupid intercooler pipe off the turbo was horrible...see pic...i had it pushed into the 90° too far and I was adding a restriction....I wonder how much that factored into my power output, if any, I'm sure it wasn't positive.

Is that the new motor in there?

Braineack 06-21-2007 07:05 PM

no still ripping off parts....wont pull till this weekend, then spend next week swaping parts and then reinstalled by the 30th.

fixed the pipe and cleaned it up, looks new again:

Just another before and after, just took some time to pretty things up under the bay while I can.

Everything but the starter and alt. plugs are off, looking to find a load leveler before I pull.

god look at how shitty that is, I bet there are zip ties visible too.

Braineack 06-22-2007 01:46 PM

nah, it's good I had the coupler pushed on too far, past my mark....it's golden now, and once the t-clamp is tighten its nice and flush...I acutally went back through my entire charge pipes and made sure all was good...they are...

now if i can only find a load lever i dont have to purchase....my mechanic friend cant find his, he was supossed to drop it off for me today.

but my head gasket and radiator hose is here, so I'm ready to get it running again.

Zipties and 14 year old miatas mix well. I'm the freaking DIY ghetto master...you know that, I just expected a little more on that porsche. :gtfo: Go harrass Brian, he's the one that posted the damn thing.

No.

Got it out!

engine out. Pics can be seen here:

first pics are of the "new" head....you can see the blown head gasket....the walls look good. Then my engine out.

neogenesis2004 06-24-2007 12:28 PM

What did I tell you about that load leveler? It makes the job so easy. Shit man, if you worked all day today you could have that shit done by sundown. Assuming you already had all the parts you need.

Braineack 06-24-2007 01:37 PM

yeah, there was no way to do it without it, I just ran to pepboys this morning and picked it up for $25 bucks.

so, I didn't just lose the rings, looks like I melted #1 and #4. But oil all over the top of all the pistons:

sure you want to sell that knocksense?

Braineack 06-24-2007 02:55 PM

it was still hooked up when this happened

that engine blew shit smoke everywhere with no knock....you saw it on the dyno, from the bay, from the exhaust....it was only a matter of time. :gay:

y8s 06-24-2007 03:23 PM

I wonder if the pistons were melted before you got it...

magnamx-5 06-24-2007 05:21 PM

eh, a little ugly, but the new short block looks alright.

https://www.miataturbo.net/~web1_bra...20(Medium).JPG

the purpose of just buying the short block was to keep the price as low and project as easy as possible. If I reringed, I wouldn't use OEM parts. It would be an extra $100+ just for rings...then hoane, etc.

magnamx-5 06-24-2007 05:47 PM

nah hone looks good from what i can see why not put some good rings in there 100$ for it to last longer than a yr think about it might take what an extra 2-3 hours.

Braineack 06-24-2007 05:55 PM

eh...effort...I'll build the old block and head i have, and swap that in one day....

this engine had less than 70K on it, headgasket blew. The owner was an old wine and cheeser and always maintained the service. The shop I bought it from had the block because the owner decide to give them the car whole in exchange for free service on his new 95 M he bought instead.

y8s 06-24-2007 05:59 PM

one day... before or after big smoky clouds?:dancegay:

magnamx-5 06-24-2007 06:03 PM

most likely after.

Braineack 06-24-2007 06:03 PM

probably after :gay:

I've still been pushing off that exhaust and seats and wheel and new harnesses and tires, just to name a few.

a few shots fom earlier I'm posting...just because:

now i just gotta swap on the tranny/clutch and then slap the head back on.

not sure what I'll do first.

enjoy my mess.
