Sam, I hear you man. this forum has given me a headache lately. It's too easy to get sucked in.

The truth is that the tiny amount of undecided voters that might come here are not going to gain valuable knowledge from us ranting on either side. And this is a miata turbo forum.

Funny coincidence: I had a long conversation with some good friends about politics last night. They are voting opposite of what I am. And most of my friends vote like me (with very few exceptions). And we got into why and how we can relate as friends in spite of it. And you know what? It's hard. But it's OK to like someone AND disagree with them. It was good to clear the air and address the tension. And neither of us wants to evangelize our positions to the others because it wont change anything and it'll just make us resentful.

Like McCain said yesterday:
there's a "difference between record and rhetoric, and I plan to talk about his record, respectfully... I don't mean that has to reduce your ferocity, I just mean it has to be respectful."
Fair enough, John. Fair enough.

“Most people who read "The Communist Manifesto" probably have no idea that it was written by a couple of young men who had never worked a day in their lives, and who nevertheless spoke boldly in the name of "the workers".”

Politicals and religion bring to the surface emotions and opinions that make it difficult to consider anything somebody says objectively without also remembering that they're a douchebag Republican/Democrat.

It might be subtle, but it also might be outright obvious... the influence of these political threads will soon start to be felt in the other subforms. This place will lose something in the process. If you consider our common goal, in the end, these threads can only hurt the forum.

If the forum concludes that there's nothing wrong with the political threads, I'll probably take a break from here for the next month. Sorry guys, I feel strongly that MT is above this ****. This will be my last post in this thread. I've had my say.
I agree with Sam.

If we can't do away with them for whatever reason, then we need to at least clean them up a bit. The name calling/bashing/insulting you're the scum of the earth because you don't side with me because you don't side with me gets old. I guess if few people need to post political threads on a turbo miata forum, ok. But they need to do so in a more professional manner. It gets old reading "Those adjective adjective adjective adjective racist adjective adjective <insert political party> ..."

The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism.

You took the words out of my mouth, sir. I did make the mistake of clicking on a few and replying, but I think I'm done arguing politics/conspiracy here.

Absolutely 100% disagree here. If you take away the ability of these people to talk about these things then they'll get their two cents in everywhere else. ****, mention gas mileage in a tech thread and you're opening yourself up to a political debate. Whereas if they have a place to spew their rhetoric, they can get it all out.

But I agree politics threads are stupid. Nobody ever changes anyone's mind arguing politics over the interweb.

I don't think censorship is the answer.

I like em. I come here for relaxation and entertainment as much as the tech side. I'm not active in 1/2 a dozen forums, I don't have time. Political opinions can be entertaining as hell if you don't let yourself get caught up emotionally. If a member holds a political opinion I think is ridiculous I don't turn around and think "holy hell, what can he possibly know about MS timing issues!"

The political system in the USA is completely screwed up whether you are a bleeding heart liberal or the tightest assed conservative. Gov't runs us unfortunately when we should be running the Gov't. Politics should be fair game and is appropriately placed in the BS section as most of it is complete BS.

Viva la revolution.

Some of the problem is that several threads aren't just political, they're conspiratorial.

Those of you that like politics and debate, I've got just the place for you.

I moderate a forum dedicated to political debate. It's http://dosomefink.com/phpbb2/index.php You are welcome to join, or just stop over and watch the fireworks. Mostly, moderation is very low key - I rarely do any unless the thread becomes a pissing match.

+100 that the last place to debate politics is on a car forum.

I agree! I loved the "MT.net has a no **** policy" thread. If I want politics I will go to MSNBC.com.

Oh sure. Correct my spelling. You are now officially making me feel bad about myself. If you weren't in another country I'd be looking for compensation for the stress counseling I will need now!

Sticks and stones may break my bones but either way I'll sue you. I think that's the national thought process isn't it?

I always enjoy traveling in other countries where things are equally or more screwed up but there is a certain logic to things. People have to be responsible for themselves. Kids have playgrounds that are actually fun. Sure they can get hurt but isn't that part of learning and growing up? It drives me nuts that cars have to yield to pedestrians. In other countries the people on foot have to look out for cars. That's the way it should be. Why does the guy going 40mph in a 3000lb vehicle have to stop when someone doing 2mph on foot can stop so much easier!

Wait. I'm in trouble now for turning the anti politics thread political. Damn.

Now who do I sue for that.

lol!

On a serious note: imagine how those of us living in satellite countries of the US feel. the DR does 85% of its trading with the US and our GDP is lower than US$ 30 billion. We are really fucked and have no say in the outcome. There's a local saying in economic circles: when the US sneezes the DR catches a cold.

I'll give you another piece of info: of the total US$10 billion in foreign earnings a year, roughly US$2 billion is money sent back home by Dominican citizens living and working in the US; no one has to be too smart to realize that figure is going to go sharply down.

Granted, I'm a Spaniard but; I married a Dominican lady and I have 3 grown sons who were born here.

I say that at least gives me the right to rant sometimes.

p.s. please don't sue me!

It's not just the DR. I've sat here in absolute amazement this past week as the major markets of Europe and Asia have been rocked to the core. And for what? Did the UK do anything wrong? Did Germany? Or Russia? Or China?

It's a bit humbling (and embarrassing) that a few unwise lending decisions in the US have led to the suspension of trading in exchanges halfway around the world, and caused significant trauma in pretty much every industrialized nation. I can't even begin to imagine, ten years from now, what the economics textbooks at universities in India and Japan will have to say about this...

We're the 800 lb gorilla of the world economy. The bull in the world's economic china shop.

It is a shame that representative Gov't really doesn't represent us so well. Let's hear it for benevolent dictators!
