I'm in this camp as well. I hope when he is done he posts a video of a stock miata running and says it's the one he built. m.net would then be full of people running out and doing this.

My money is on spun main/rod bearings......all of em!! How long do you guys think the jb weld will hold up??

 

In all seriousness, the JB Weld is plenty strong enough to hold that aluminum piece on there. Should hold no problem assuming decent prep work was done. But when it gets hot... I'm not sure how hot it can get before the JB Weld will weaken/fail. Anyone know the average temperature of a piston? I'm sure it depends on load. I'd venture to say it could idle forever like with those parts JB welded.

I can't wait for vids.

 

yeah i hope they hold on long enough for him to try to take a rip down the street, failure in the driveway would be too boring

I want the piece to come dislodged at 7000rpm and turn sideways in the motor. Anything less and I will be disappointed. Actually if it works well enough to get others to do it then does the aforementioned failure a month or two from now.

 

500F-650F is a pretty rough estimate.

 

I've used JB weld-type epoxy inside a two-stroke engine where it works fine, but on a piston? It might stay together for the first few cycles after the engine fires that's about it.
