I did some Wiki'ing, and I believe the machines I used were of the Macintosh Classis variety. I do recall that they used ADB, and the timeframe on their manufacture would be about right, as I recall that they were brand new when we got them.

Back then it was almost like they were trying new things for the sake of trying new things. Now it seems like they're just doing it so they can be terminally hip.
Well, I think they were trying new things for the sake of making a more useful product than everyone else.

At the time, Macs really did have an edge. High-resolution graphics, a windowed multitasking OS, support for proportional typefaces built right in, great 3rd party support for MIDI... If you were working in an environment such as desktop publishing or music, there really were some compelling arguments in favor of the system that made it worth paying Apple's premium. Granted, the Amiga and Atari AT machines were every bit the equal (and in some ways, the superior) of Apple's Mac line, but those companies were doomed by their management to failure.

Thing is, the edge was fleeting. Given time, the Wintel market caught up and then surpassed Apple's lead in terms of graphical capabilities and the OS. Apple hung onto their core markets for quite a few years, mostly out of habit, but it seems that somewhere around the early 2000s, the professional users started asking why they were paying 3x as much for Apple hardware when a commodity PC could do every bit as much, particularly now that the applications which were once Apple's domain were now available on either platform.

Sucked for Apple, I'm sure. And I gotta hand it to them- they did an excellent job of repositioning themselves from a machine for serious media professionals to a machine for the hip and trendy. But today, that's really all it boils down to. And hey, not my bag-o-dicks, but whatever works for them.

Gotcha. Totally non-obvious and non-intuitive.

It's funny, a friend of mine, Jon, is an IT guru with a company down in Florida that does medical transcription. He owns two laptops. One is a Mac running XP, and the other is a Dell running OS-X.

Heh. Since I'm ranting:

"PIN number" When you say this, you are saying "Personal Identification Number number."

"ATM machine" Again, "Automated Teller Machine machine."

When you say these things, you sound like a complete idiot. You don't have DVD discs or VCR recorders, do you? Ever logged into a PC computer? Do you pour a big glass of OJ juice for yourself in the morning?

Also, since my last attempt failed:

Same as "PCV valve"

That comic is the hilariously sad experience of so many people I know and meet on a daily basis. It's like compulsive gamblers.

I think this SNL skit pretty much sums Apple products up for me:

That said I'm posting this from my "old" iMac
