Killing Chipmunks

Everyone is telling me I'm a dickhead for wanting to kill these fucking things, but I feel that I have no choice.

The mice are gone (from what I know), but now these peeping fucks are running all around the outside of the house. They fight and get into these brawls as I watch them claw each other's face, going into a whirlwind type attack. As they fight they make so much noise that its driving me crazy. Sometimes they peep and peep for half the day!! :vash:

I know where they live and I see them regularly throughout the day. They're fast as shit so I'll likely only have one shot to get them. This Gamo PT80 that I had from years ago is still around, but I'm wondering if I should get a rifle type gun with a scope.

What do you guys think? Any advice on a nice, affordable little chipmunk shooter? I have a slingshot and I'm a god damn scientist with that thing, but I'd rather just have something I can keep on the desk to just blip them in the head real quick.

gearhead_318 09-11-2011 01:45 PM

If your in a place with neighbors then a .22 is probably out of the question so I'd just go with some sort of air rifle if you want to shoot them. You do not need a scope, you'd have to sight it in and even then it wouldn't make things any easier when shooting at a fast moving little thing. Since you know where they live and where they like to spend there time, I'd suggest you try to trap them.

messiahx 09-11-2011 01:51 PM

My parents have ground squirrels that like to dig all sorts of holes around the yard. Living in the country means that the .22 is used. Kill them, they are pests.

jbresee 09-11-2011 02:20 PM

Gotta go with Gearhead's suggestion.

You can get a powerful air rifle with iron sights that should do what you need. It's quiet, accurate, and can be used safely in a pretty close neighborhood.

I thin out our population, or they try to move indoors as the temperature drops.

Doppelgänger 09-11-2011 02:24 PM

Wait...you want to kill them because they making a tiny chirping noise? That's logical....

Next thing we'll hear is that all the birds and insects are driving you nuts and you need to find a way to take them out as well. Sheesh.

miatauser884 09-11-2011 04:53 PM

My buddy killed all of his with a 5 gal bucket filled with water. Then float sun flower seeds on the water. They jump in, and guess what, that's not a huge bucket of sunflower seeds. bitches. I like them, but they are loud in the morning.

falcon 09-11-2011 05:28 PM

^^^ lol..

And yeah, they are pests. Don't feel bad for wanting to off them. Sounds like your problem with the chipmunks is similar to mine with racoons.

Just make sure you leave Alvin and his buddies alone. They are hella dope.

olderguy 09-11-2011 05:33 PM

Another member had a problem with chipmunks digging under his walk. He got a live trap and carried them a few blocks away, until he realized they were like homing pigeons. Once he carried them several miles away, he was able to thin the herd down to -0-

chicksdigmiatas 09-11-2011 06:36 PM

Bird shot? Also I had a bb gun, it was the cheapest crossman co2 bb pistol. I killed large amounts of birds and rats with it.

Way too cruel. If your gonna kill them do it quickly and with some compassion, not so they slowly die in what I consider to be a pretty terrible manner. If you just want them gone get a 5 gal bucket with a lid, make a trap door with whatever food they like glued to the top of the door, they step on the trap door and fall down and can not get back out. Take the bucket full of chipmunks into the woods and let 'em go.

if you'd have just sacked up and adopted a couple kitties, you'd be dominating those little fuckers right now

Vashthestampede 09-12-2011 09:02 AM

lol

Thanks for the help guys.

Doppel buddy, its not just the noise they make, which really is enough to drive me crazy. Its also the fact that they're going under the house in the crawl space. The other animals don't bother me much. Matter a fact I hung a hummingbird feeder last week and we already have a family of them that hang around.

We stopped by my parents house yesterday and my sister-in-laws sided with my gf in saying that I'm an asshole for wanting to shoot them. Regardless, I've decided to buy a decent little vermin rifle. I haven't found the right one yet, but for now I ordered some ammo for the pistol and I'll work with what I have. :)

BTW, pusha, I cant do the cat thing. I'm super allergic to them. Always have been. Plus we have the 2 small dogs.

pusha 09-12-2011 04:05 PM

[Providing it's legal to kill the species in your area]

This will sounds shitty, but put up a bird feeder and stock it with seed. Let the chipmunks eat from it and restock anything they eat, without fucking with them for a few days. Then, one day, BAM! Start shooting those little fuckers. Kill them, kill them all and if any more come back, kill them too.

You need to get this done before winter. I am jelly of your opportunity.

UrbanFuturistic 09-13-2011 10:20 AM

I have a beautiful Sheridan pellet rifle that would just love to partake in this exercise. But alas, I have no chipmunks to shoot. Pump action, turn-down bolt, iron sights, the works! Im like the sniper in the bell tower in Saving Private Ryan with this little honey. Come to think of it, theres really nothing here to shoot at in the pan-handle. Except the neighbours dogs that bark all night long. But Im sure they would instantly know who did that.

Vashthestampede 09-13-2011 11:47 AM

lol

When we moved in there was already this American flag here and its all tore up and weathered, but I didnt want to take it down. Well now I found a reason to replace it. I'm hanging this fucker on the front of the house to let these little bastards know this means war.

The huge tree right outside the window has been dropping nuts all morning and these guys have been feasting and fighting over them the whole time.

Little do they know that ammo and CO2 will be here tomorrow. I also found this site to print out some paper targets. I'm going to rig together a little frame to mount the targets about 25ft away. Until I get a nice rifle I figure I should practice with the pistol.

http://www.mindflow.com.au/targets/

I may even rig up a video for this battle to come.

UrbanFuturistic 09-13-2011 11:55 AM

If you get a rifle, get a pump rifle. IMHO they are better. Also, because its just BBs and or pellets, just post the targets up on the fence in your back yard, provided you have a wooden fence. Thats what I do.

sixshooter 09-13-2011 11:39 PM

My father used to feed the squirrels at his house but now over the last few months they've started chewing through the little plastic water tubes in the pool heating array on his roof. He just bought a scope for the old pellet rifle...

Now I have plenty of ammo and C02 for the pistol. Although the sights are off quite a bit so its not going to be easy trying to nail them with this thing.

Last night after I was done painting I stopped down at the excavating shop and had a few beers with the guys, talking about this shit. My buddy went behind his tri axle and pulled out this old Sheridan pellet gun and handed it to me. He said to just bring it back after I kill them all. lol

I have a nice sale pending and if it goes through I'm going to get myself a good rifle with a scope. So far I've taken a few shots at these bastards already and no luck so far.

As I'm typing this right now all I hear is them peeping outside and rustling around in the leaves. Motherfuckers!!!! :vash:

How many fps is your rifle? Mine is 900fps .22 break barrel which I think is alot easier and quieter if you're stalking something. Animal wont hear you pumping away trying to build pressure for another shot if you miss.

I'm def sticking with the rifle man. Just have to get a little more used to it. :bigtu:

This thing is pretty bad ass. I've been pumping it about 8 or 9 times with every shot.

I've literally been at shooting at them since I posted earlier. I'm sitting at my desk with the window open just waiting for them and probably fired 20 shots from the rifle and 10 or so from the pistol.

The pistol is loud and they run off when I miss. When I miss with the rifle they look around and by the time I have it reloaded and pumped they take off.

Just now I was between shooting and looking through the binoculars and I heard one to the right of me. He was sitting on a rock at our fire pit. I took a shot and nailed him right off the rock, but he got up and started to fumble around and scurry away. I grabbed the pistol and ran outside for what I expected to be an epic "finish him" moment, but of course he was nowhere to be found.

Back to shooting!! lol

P.S. When the gf left this morning she was pissed off at me cause she knew what I'd be doing all day.

I dont know exactly how many FPS the rifle is. Ill look into it for you.

However, he is in the house and I would think that him pumping shouldnt be a problem.

Edit: Its 675 fps max. And says you should only pump to 8.

ThatGuy85 09-15-2011 10:01 AM

BB guns ftw. I used to have a scope attached to my old pellet/bb rifle. I could hit birds in the head from 20 yards away lol...

gospeed81 09-15-2011 10:20 AM

+1 on the Benjamin Sheridan pellet rifle.

I had one of the .22 cal ones that I grew up on. Deadly accurate, very few pumps, good range, excellent power.

Had to put down a rabid dog with it once. Completely up to the task. Shooting varmit is just a leg stretch for that thing.

Pumping is discreet, I just don't have much time. They stick around for 3-4 seconds after the first blast, not much time to pump/reload.

I wish I had a scope on this rifle. When I was a kid we used to go out into the neighboring woods (now GE capital) with backpacks full of food, repelling gear, guns, ammo and knives. Nothing more than killing of any animal we came across. I've actually felt bad about it since then, but this time is different. I'm not going after them for fun, I'm doing it because its necessary. lol

I just realized that the Sheridan takes .20cal pellets but I'm using the .177cal that the pistol uses. Looks like I need to pick up some more ammo.

UrbanFuturistic 09-15-2011 10:23 AM

For a dog Id have used the K. But then, I shoot the K in the back yard for shits and giggs.

gospeed81 09-15-2011 10:26 AM

Yeah, your pellets have to be the problem...because those sights are great.

Get the big bore pellets (the diablo "wadcutters" are great for game) and sight in properly. Profit.

I'm going to throw them down at the snake pond for them to chew on. :bigtu:

Pretty sure I hit one but its under brush. Too much god damn cover!! I'm going out to check if it was a kill and rake some of the leaves away. They scurry around so fast that there's hardly any chances to take a shot. When they do finally stop its under bushes and shit so they blend right in.

It just started to rain here so looks like I'm done hunting for the day.

I was trooping the porch with the rifle in hand and the pistol tucked when I heard them on the side of the house. As I got closer I heard gnawing and clawing under the house by the AC unit (which randomly stopped working recently).

As I listened I knew I had to wait for him. There he is, broke dirt and his little hands are digging away from underneath the house. I put the rifle barrel right up to the hole and BOOM! His little purring noises slowly started to go away, but they were still faint. I untucked the pistol and fired all 8 shots point blank into the hole. The noise was gone.

Here's a few pictures of what I unearthed from the hole with a pair of pliers.

***GRAPHIC MATERIAL NOT SUTIBLE FOR CHILDREN***

The hole before I touched it.

I threw that little fuck down at the snake pond right after I took the pictures. So that's 1 down and probably 49 to go. I chased a few down and shot at probably close to a dozen different ones, only injuring the one other one this morning.

Thankfully we have no neighbors close by. I can only imagine what I look like out there. I'm sure they hear me though cause the blasts are echoing through the woods after each shot. lol

Matt Cramer 09-15-2011 12:39 PM

Dunno how big the snakes in the snake pond are, but if they're big enough, grabbing a couple of them and turning them loose under the house might help out. :D

Not recommended if they happen to be cottonmouths or rattlesnakes, though.

devin mac 09-15-2011 12:45 PM

yeah, matt... we don't have much of that type of stuff up in this neck of the woods. maybe timber rattlers if you go looking for them. definitely no cottonmouths, though.

Vashthestampede 09-15-2011 12:56 PM

The guy that takes care of the property didnt say what kind they were. He just told me that the last one he shot was close to 8ft long and he shot it with his shotgun. He told me to be careful if I go down there because there's a shit ton of them I guess. I just walked within throwing distance and sent them a gift via airmail. :)

I think the rifle is off cause I'm using the wrong cal ammo like someone suggested earlier. Its inconsistent shot after shot.

The pistol however is damn near spot on. I actually prefer the pistol now after seeing their performance back to back on the target sheet.

I'm looking around for a nice rifle with a scope. Any recommendations? Looking to spend somewhere in the $150-$200 range, but I'm willing to pay more if its REALLY worth it. I don't need a tactical flashlight or silencer type rifle. Just a scope to help me zero in on these bitches.

After another 2 dozen shots fired this morning I think I injured one again on the fire pit. I'm counting almost 10 out in the open at once. I think I moved into THIER house. :vash:

This morning I was on the phone with the eBay rep on speakerphone loading up and taking shots out the window. lol

gospeed81 09-16-2011 03:17 PM

Seriously...get the right pellets and you'll love that gun.

Nothing like being a badass shot with open sights.

You should seriously have 3 dead chipmunks laying across your yard before the next time you have to get up to piss.

If this thread doesn't have some real fucking kill shots the next time I open it I'm shutting the shit down.

chicksdigmiatas 09-16-2011 03:30 PM

Lol, I caught a baby diamond back in my garage, and it needs food. Irish I had a chipmunk problem. My airsoft rifle would take out about 4 in one swoop.

UrbanFuturistic 09-16-2011 04:54 PM

Yeah, Im with godspeed. Proper ammo and you will fall in love with that rifle. Dont spend any money, unless its on the right size pellets!

Vashthestampede 09-16-2011 05:24 PM

Ok guys. I'll pickup some ammo for the rifle this weekend and see how she does.

Trust me. I fucking WISH I could take out 10 a day. :vash:

Give me some time and I promise this thread will be filled with kill shot pictures and stories to boot.

I will not let these motherfuckers get the best of me!!! lol

elesjuan 09-16-2011 07:41 PM

Admittedly I did not read every post in this thread, kinda skimmed. Know that .22 rifles have been touched on, but you CAN get a fairly good .22 rifle for about $150.00 a brand new Marlin rifle, and a Ruger 10/22 for about $200.

Used is a different story.

http://jugrnot.com/IMG_20110528_154929.jpg

I got that as you see it for $150 used from Cabela's, including the scope. Its a New England firearms .17HMR. Shoots a little 17 grain hollow point or polymer tipped bullet at over 2000 feet per second.

I'm surprised that the snakes aren't already there. I work in a chemical plant and every spring we get birds that nest on the 4th floor (we are talking steel beams and grating). You always walk across snakes that have come all the way from the woods and crawled up 75 feet of steel to get to the birds.

Vashthestampede 09-19-2011 11:17 AM

Pusha - Although similar, I think our rifles are different. I'll take a POV shot of mine later today or tomorrow and we can compare. ;)

I've been outside since 9am clearing all the brush behind the house and shooting when I see them. I cut down a few trees and clipped everything from poison ivy to flowers. I'm trying to destroy their habitat so they fucking leave already.

I got another kill though. 2 shots and he ran down the front hill behind a rock. I followed him and he was still twitching so I gave him another 6 for good measure. One of the first 2 got him in the eye. Ouch.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ker/kill05.jpg

About an hour later I hit another one in the same spot, same deal, 2 shots. Only he ran into the thick brush and I couldn't track him down. I have no idea if it was a kill or not, but because I couldn't recover the body I'm not counting it as one.

If I didnt have to go down to the shop I'd stay here and keep it going, but unfortunately I have to get some work done. lol

BTW, this was all with the pistol. I have a 500 count box of Diablo .20cal pellets for the rifle now, but I'm not as accurate as I am with the pistol. Not to mention the pistol shoots 8 shots off in 2 or 3 seconds, so I almost favor the pistol more so than not. Plus its easier to grab and run out the house than the rifle is.

No need to reload if you hit them in the fucking head first time at 650+fps.

kaisersoze 09-19-2011 06:59 PM

For the distance it sounds like you are shooting at iron sites should be fine.
There are tons of cheap air rifles both multipump and break barrel and all of them will be plenty accurate at less then 30 yrds.
I killed more stuff than I could count with an old daisy 888 and a cheap crosman break barrel rifle when I was a kid. You might like something like the 888 for what you are doing as you can put 100 BBs in it and not have to carry pellets. BBs are plenty to kill these little chipmunks.
http://www.airgundepot.com/break-barrel-air-rifles.html has cheap rifles with a scope if you insist. Hell you can get a laser site or a red dot site for cheap too.

How much are we talking per kill?

I just came in from a short hunting session. The first kill was the same 2 shot shit I've been dealing with. The first shot always knocks them down, then I have to finish them off with another one. Usually I fire a few extra to make sure they're dead. I don't know, I'm way better with the pistol than I am with the rifle. I just run up in the woods at them and start firing, whereas with the rifle I'm inside shooting from the window and they're always too far away.

Well, after the first kill I sat on the porch to smoke some herb to celebrate before anything else. After I smoked I decided to patrol the woods real quick before I call it a day (I've been firing at them on and off since 9am while trying to work).

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ker/kill06.jpg

This one little fuck is just peeping and peeping, staring at me screaming. So I creeped up on him real slow, put the gun up and nailed the fuck. Then he jumps into a dead hollowed out, rotted tree. I didnt have anything with me so I started smashing my heel into the rot, breaking it away. No luck. I couldn't get through the thick bark (did not have steel toe boots on). So I grabbed it in the middle where it was a little more broken up and got it in half. I took the half he was in and started smashing it down on a big rock. Well after about 5 or 6 smashes it broke open and there he was. I felt bad but fuck it. Shot him point blank dead.
