little argument i had with a guy at sonic, miata vs golf mk2
Opinions, stories, facts and how many mods are needed to make a golf mk2 able to beat a miata miata on the auto cross, and for the golfs sake let's give it the I think 125 or something 1.8 they come in and the miata a 1.6 bone dry....let's get fun with this!
Haha apperantly by their knowledge nothing can out handle a 91 ef 4door or an mk2 oh and a ford ranger can also out handle a miata on the auto cross. Just figured id let y'all in on that lol and doppelganger you know the harbison ricers? Haha
Well everybody there things their **** is hot stuff and hate miatas and I think its due to them not being a honda, if its not a honda it sucks apperantly...but they deserve some well deserved *** waxing since they can talk **** on a turbo miata running 12ibs...like wtf really, they don't know **** about turbos, minus the guys there who has a turbod 240 with an rb20det swap he speaks no ****
To set the record straight, golfs can be very capable autocrossers in the right hands. My friend has one with just nice suspension and he is usually dead even with my turbo miata on 205 RS2s. He is a little slower than me when we're on race tires. I've autocrossed with him for years and his car handles really well.
At one point I ran a MkI Golf (Rabbit) in AX for about 5 years, won several local championships with it. A friend donated use of an early data aq system that we used in it (G-Analyst), it would pull about 1.05g steady state with higher transients on course. That would be pretty tame today but in 1989 it was a lot. It was also on 185/60-14 A008RS tires on stockish 14x6 wheels. A MkI/II Golf COULD be made to corner as well as a Miata but not mod for mod. With similar mods/driver skill/hp the Miata will win every time IMO (having had both).
Neons in right hands rape face at autocross. Especially the ACR variety.
As for the miata all you really need is coilovers, wheels and slicks. Xida + 13x9 + 255 hoosiers and you will destroy things. Well, and a torsen.

Thanks...
One other thing, the MkII Golf GTI's were HT or RD series engines with 102 or 105hp if I recall correctly. A stock engined MkI was around 78hp stock. Even a stock Miata has a HP advantage, but the Golf wins the weight contest particularly in MkI form (my '77 had a MKII GTI engine in it and weighed 1900lbs wet with a cage and euro bumpers, 1958 with stock bumpers). MKII 16V GTI's were up around 125hp.
