so why do I need a dual core? I'm only going to use this computer for the intarwebs, music, occasional movies on planes, gps, and tuning FI.

Not to flame Jefe, but do not pay that much for a laptop with a celeron and 256 mb ram

Hell a P3-600 with 256mb will be good for that. I'm looking at Compaq Armada M300s on ebay. Old school P3 and have a serial port. Plus they're tiny. Downside is you need the docking station for CD/DVD usage. They go about $200. This will be %90 tuning laptop. I've got a $75 portable DVD player for DVDs.
