Search Hakuna over at Miata.net and you'll find the setup you're looking for. Others have done a pax footwell sub. Y8s likes the trunk sub. Msydnor has windblocker sub that can hold 4 6.5 woofers in the for sale section.

Everything is somewhat of a compromise.

Getting a good seal on the tunnels is sort of tough. You can use free air subs, but I'm not a big fan especially on that deck that is made of a thin sheet of aluminum.

With a little time and not much money you can put 2 8" subs right behind the seats. If you have a rollbar it compromises the space a bit, but you can make it work. Sealing up the sides that go back to the trunk helped a ton and the dynamat keeps the sound inside the car and sounding tight. Lots of details on my setup in my build thread. Here's some pics....

Thanks dude. My **** sounds better than most cars that actually have space to work with. I wasn't down for a footwell or trunk sub like most guys have. That always seemed like a fail in the audio department to me.

Also want to add that if you do this, definitely think about the dynamat. It makes an insane difference.

C'mon, if a sub fits in a hole, it must sound good, right?

I'd probably go with a trunk sub if I didn't have golf clubs in there 99% of the time. Debating if I want to go with a properly volumed, sealed box similar to what Vash did and just replace the tin foil metal back there with a complete MDF enclosure for my single 8 inch Quattro. I had to build a mount for the GM PCM in my footwell and though it doesn't take up much space, it'll probably stop me from going footwell again.

Then again, the best sub in the world won't make your choice of music NOT SUCK.

lol I hope to have the car done by then. If I do, I'll be there. If I don't, I'll just be depressed if I go.

The metal plate was junk until I wrapped it in dynamat. If I had better woodworking skills maybe I would have attempted making a lid out of MDF, but it was easy enough to beef up the tin foil and seal everything off with that foam. The difference from open trunk tunnels to sealed ones was a world of difference. Then add dynamat and x that by 10. Now I just need my buddy that has a shop adjust all the equalizer **** and get it sounding mint.

I'm stereo retarded. Can you actually hear a difference with the trunk sub? Like really, a decent sound?

We stuck a Bazooka 8" 5 channel tube (powered - not sure of the amps) in two of our Miatas. They don't shake the car or anything but they do give you just enough base to make the stereo sound good at speed with the top down. We mounted them on the back wall of the truck. Pretty much stays out of the way and won't screw too much with the trunk space.
