Well, I'm sad to hear about the death of an idea, but I'm glad that your salvation is now secure.

Dude has the tranny out of the truck and ready to pick up. If he ever responds with his address, I'll let you know.

I'll probably change my mind tomorrow.

Really depends on what i think i can realistically get out of the XJ. $4-5k is what i'm thinking.

$2k gets me a really nice B2600i. The balance gets me my diesel swap or absurd power.

This is definitely happening now.
Scored a 5 speed with a gear driven T-case, and I'm trading a dude some guns for a donor truck.

New thread coming soon.

Don't worry buddy, unlike our young apartment bound friend, I have a rather sizable shop that is only half full of other projects.

Plus I have the most important thing of all: a feeble mind.
It allows me to persevere no matter the stupidity of the task.

But bro, don't you want slightly less torque for less weight and head gasket issues?

Now that you put it that way, more complications and less reliability to go along with my smaller displacement sounds pretty awesome.

Here's a thing I want:
long-travel kit
I've been trying to catch the guy with the donor truck at home all week, but I haven't had any luck. My schedule has been pretty jacked since I got the new job offer.
Anyway, once that's all sorted, the swap will be taking place at my mother's house.
She has a nice pole building with a concrete floor that will soon be empty.
It'll be a lot more pleasant than trying to roll the cherry picker through gravel.

While I was joking about the 7MGTE for the XJ, what do you think about it for the truck? It's the right length, and it bolts straight to the r151.
I will be doing a small body lift, so I wouldn't even have to modify the oil pan. Just bolt it in, wire it up and go.
Price and difficulty are about the same.
I need to just have the parts in hand so I can get on with it.

Apartment?! Good joke, never. Just a garage that won't fit my truck, and an annoying HOA. But the good news is the rent is month to month, so were just back to searching for the right place. Don't lose hope. Also, I said not to get hopes up until the 7.3 was in my possesion.

That kit seems kindof expensive to me, honestly...

Here's what i have on the wishlist for my XJ: XJ 6.5" Critical Path Long Arm Lift Kit - Iron Rock Off Road

Outfitted with the options i want, it's still just under $2k.

As for 7mgte. What's the end cost vs just dumping a 5vz in it?

Pretty much the same, although I would want to put studs and a metal head gasket in the 7mgte.

The motor mount situation might be slightly better with the 5vze.
I don't know that one is appreciably better than the other. N/A they both put out roughly the same numbers.
The straight 6 gets the nod for simplicity, but there isn't really anything complex about either.
I guess whatever I can find cheaper locally is what I'll end up with. Either way, I will be much happier than I am with the 3.0.

Donor truck secured!
Now I just need someone to help me tow it away and visit the scrap yard for an engine.

Stuff is about to get weird fellas.
I just want to say that it is painful trying to assimilate information from the many 4x4 and toyota sites out there. 9 out of 10 hits are from some newb asking a dumb question, and some forum warrior going off on an opinionated diatribe that has nothing to do with the original topic. It has made me appreciate this site even more.
It is late here, so let me data dump for my own future reference in english.
The auto tranny found in the 89 and newer pickups is the a340h. The T-case is integral to the body and shares the same fluid (the extra drag contributes nicely to the 3.0's already exhilarating sluggishness).
The a340h (and later a340f) are mechanically identical to the Jeep AW4. The great thing about the AW4 is that novak makes a cheap adapter to the Dana 300 T-case. This adapter also makes it possible to clock the T-case.
This adapter is also compatible with the AX15, which is internally identical to the Toy R150f.
The Atlas II bolts on without an adapter.
The AX15 tail-housing bolts to the R150f.

80's non-turbo Supras with the 7mge bolt directly to a W series transmission with the Supra bellhousing. Turbo versions (7mgte) bolt directly to R-series trans.

I'm up for work in just a few hours. I hope this was all very confusing to you.
