Slacker was the wrong term. Slacker was too negative a word. No offence meant. I consider myself a "slacker" yet I put in 55-60 hour weeks. My use of it isn't about willingness to work or working hard. What I meant was laid back, less driven to climb the corporate ladder, unconcerned about status and other peoples views of my position or success, easier going, able to go or get along.

You can raise kids in separate households or whilst not working for a major corporation/"being successful". No one in the relationship benefits if you (either Adult) are living in misery. It takes two for a relationship to work, not one chained to another.

Don't take my point to mean you don't have to make sacrifices in life, it just depends on your priorities. If sending your kids to a private school is your top priority and you have to work a shitty job to do that then that's your priority. If not working some corporate job is your priority then don't send your kids to private school.

Besides, it seems like the OP is doing fine financially (though you can raise kids in poverty).

Cueball - in your view of "slacker" thats exactly what I am. :) I enjoy it. Needless to say, some things have come my why that I couldn't pass up and I'm lucky the cards have been dealt the way they have. I know that and appreciate it and don't complain.

I think it comes down to her wanting me to "get my shit together" but not realizing it's more together than most of all her friends who have 4 year degrees and are in $70k in debt for an education that isn't earning them my $42k, but somewhere in the $35k range, while still living at home after "leaving the dorms where they were independent." I understand at some point that education will pay off and they will financially surpass me. Before that happens I'll pull my head out of my ass and WANT MORE for myself, and I'll pursue it. I think she may also be a little jealous that things have come pretty easy for me and I haven't had to bust ass in school to get where I am. All she knows is school.
