yeah, whats with the use of texts and CL? I hate that. I hate giving out my number even after we arranged a meeting.

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 02:38 PM

If I have ever put a number, it's my Google Voice number. I don't use my real number with CL stuff.

elesjuan 09-18-2012 02:38 PM

Yeah, and "swinging by my place to look/pickup item" is also a big effing no no. Does that bother anyone else when someone wants to come pick it up? I'll meet them somewhere close, but not at my house.

I made the mistake of letting my google voice number "go" when it integrated into my sprint account.. :(

I had a great cross border experience.

I was doing a US/CANADA craigslist search for a heavier flywheel and also a steering damper for my YZ450F motocross bike. Found an add from the US where the guy had a bike for sale with those parts already on it. He replied and said he would take the parts off and put back the stock items so he could still sell his bike and I could grab the goodies. They were worth over $500. He was deep south and I'm in Canada. PayPal'd and I received them a short bit later. Great guy and a good deal for both of us.
That is probably a rare example.

people like us are out there, just few and far between

rleete 09-18-2012 05:39 PM

What's the problem with people coming out to pick things up? I've sold or given away a whole garage full of crap over the years, and never had a single problem. I live in a house in a fairly quiet suburban neighborhood. I't's not like it's a secret location or anything. I've had people show up in rusty, clapped out pickups looking like crack heads, and they paid and left. I don't invite them in to tour the place.

I've had people offer to pay for stuff I'm giving away for free. I always refuse, as I feel that defeats the whole "free" thing. One lady, who I gave a set of aluminum awnings to, insisted I take some money, as I could have gotten something for scrap. I declined. The next week my wife found an envelope in the mailbox with 15 (or so, I forget the number) bucks inside. I'm sure she came back and left it.

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 05:43 PM

Yeah, I let people come to the house to pick stuff up. Cool toys are kept out of site. We lock our doors. We have a dog. I'm well-armed. It's a calculated risk, I guess.

i hate people, and trust leave even worse.

I always meet people at well-lit gas stations where I know the transaction will take place in view of the CCTV cameras, just in case. Also, I sell a lot of car parts and stuff so my "clientele" are often undesirables.

Stein 09-18-2012 11:37 PM

I've sold three and bought seven Miatas plus a couple of other cars on CL without issue. I guess it depends on where you live.

I did have my wife's old 2004 Protege for sale for $2000 firm. I explicitly said in the ad that it was very well priced and if you even hint at offering less I will hang up immediately. I had an offer of $1950 because "that's all he had" and I hung up. Guy called me several times immediately after that but I never answered. I guess he found another $50 but he missed out. It sold 15 minutes later for asking. Overall, my experiences in the Midwest have been good.

pusha 09-18-2012 11:42 PM

Is $2000 the going rate for 2004 protégés?

I refreshed my CL ads last night and the bengal kitten lady sent me another offer. It contains possibly the funniest possible misspelling of the word "expensive."

Bingo. I just don't trust people. At all. Don't have a giant garage to hide all my toys in and would rather not take the risk. Can't be home all the time.

Bluebook on my 2000 Protege is $2200 and I probably wouldn't take a dime less for it even with the hood missing clear coat and 250,000 miles!

Braineack 09-19-2012 10:19 AM

I have something on CL right now. at 2am I got ten spam emails from the same person, very annoyings.

18psi 09-19-2012 10:20 AM

they are very expenis furbabies br0

Braineack 09-19-2012 10:25 AM

I would totally trade my 2 tires for a Bengal furbaby.

mgeoffriau 09-19-2012 10:57 AM

I've been debating between two possible replies to the bengal lady.

1. "I'm tempted by your offer, but I'm not sure. Are the kittens tender?"

2. "Sorry, not interested, we're vegetarians."
