Default My new Track Rival.

The only one who beat me on Tuesday nights time attack, a 2008 Z06, aka 505hp 3100lbs of track monster.

First I'll introduce you to my car:

Name: 307511407_vywR3-M-1.jpg
Views: 2
Size: 41.8 KB

1990 w/94 1.8, t25 .48/.48 turbo w/3in dp and straight thru magnaflow exhaust, srt4 i/c, 2.5 piping, greddy type-s bov(recird), 9psi (full boost at 2000rpm), rx7 lsd shimmed up too 200ft/lbs or so, kyb agx's w/dropzone (cheap-***) springs(450/350) on sleeves(ride height is slammed), Rb 11/8' hollow front sway with solid endlinks, stock rear bar, butterfly brace, cannon brace and poly filled diff mounts. (94)Cross drilled brembos with pbr ceramic front pads and metal masher rears, 15x7 SSR type-x 9lbs rims on azenis.

So the car is ok, brakes great, neutral handling, power is very linear and my driving ability is decent (only my 5th hpde ever) and I was only worried about a built 230n/a whp type-R catching me after running close times with him at the previous practice event. But I beat him once now (he placed 3rd behind me) and I know I can do it again, so I am now setting my sights on the Z06.

To put things in prespective a local seasoned racer ran a 70.11 in his 440whp mazda rx7 (rotary powered FC fully prepped race car) on ra-1's.

The vette crushed him(and me) running consistent sub 70.0 second laps(fastest was 68.73). I only managed to squeak out a 72.89(first run of the day, caught a turbo corolla and a bimmer before running out of time) then incuring a massive headache (thanks to a straight piped side exit 1.6 miata) that fucked the rest of my night. On the upside I did beat the 2nd place racetire car (porshe 944 turbo, megasquirt and 15psi approx 320whp on v710's) by a full second!

So I read up on the vette alittle bit after the fact and what the ****! This car is amazing...

Quarter mile in 11.5, 0-60 in 3.5, 3100lbs, individual abs, asm, traction control ect ect.

These lapping events are a points championship and the classing is racetire or street tire, thats it. So he shows up and I'm fucked everytime guareenteed.

How in the hell do I beat him?...Well I'm starting off by finally getting my downpipe for the GT2871 made and installing that next week. I have a 99 head in need of cams but I doubt I'll get to that this year. I'm thinking the turbo will make me enough power to overwhelm the skinny *** 205/50/15 azenis and that some wide *** rims and fender cutting is nessicary. the springs and shocks are hella cheap-o but I don't believe they are holding me back much, same with the brakes, they seem up to par.

So what do guys think, obviously I know experience will help alot more than some tires and power but I can only attend so many events, plus the technology difference between our cars is a joke so I need as much power as I can get imo.

Recommendations on some light wide rims or anything else is appretiated, thanks for looking.

Ask Chris Swearengen what wheels he is running with his 275 Hoosiers. I understand he's pretty happy with them.

edit Do you need to stay with a street tire for this?

Street tire is a must, I daily drive the car (sometimes). Plus the vette is on stock (bfg's IIRC)

get the 6ULs and the widest street time you can get...other than that, more power and more driving nd you'll get there

I ask because you mentioned cutting the fenders. There's not much out there in a street tire that would require it.

The new R1R is supposedly going to be out in a 225/45/15 "soon" and that's about as good as I can imagine.

The Hankook RS2 is available in a 225/45/15 and a 245/45/16 presently. The latter is gonna be the widest street tire I can find without going to a 17 or 18" wheel... Those 245s on a set of 16x8 Enkei RP-F1s will be neither cheap nor lightweight, but if you really think more tire is the answer, that's how to do it.

Personally, given your need to stay with street tires, I don't think you're going to improve signifigantly over your current rubber. I'd leave the tires be for now and do something about your suspension. You could use some better dampers than those KYBs, and probably some more suspension travel as well. Consider spending your money on either a set of FCM-revalved Bilsteins with NB upper mounts, or if you're feeling exotic, maybe look at the Tein Flex or Afco systems.

But at the end of the day, you gotta admit- that Z06 is one tough mother. Given that he paid >$70k for that car, and most of us are in the <$15k range, I'd say you already won.

Get used to 2nd place. You are ~4sec behind him on a 70ish second course. A serious set of Rs like the Hoosier A06 275's might get you close.

He's got you beat on tire, suspension, power and braking. The only thing you've got going for you is that track is tight and he won't be able to get into the power in a big way, so the brakes won't help him out as much either.

Good luck to ya. I've got to get out and attend one of these events.

I'm thinking sabotage might be nessicary, one loose valve stem, happens all the time, no one brings air pumps lol.

He can run the entire coarse in second gear aswell, he was pissed he didnt get to shift

Yeah, that's the one low-dollar machine that might stand a chance against the Z06. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone make "street" tires in 10x5 or 11x7.

No, it's a shifter cart track. I should have been more clear

Dude if it's a shifter cart track you might actually be able to take down that monster. It should be tight enough and narrow enough that he'll be pinned down.
I think you need to address your suspension. I have KYB AGXs. and I now wish I had spend the money on better dampers, their adjustments are silly and don't actually change much worthwhile.

Wide tire might actually help out more on this kind of track, but certainly the stickiest stuff you can get will.

After those two things are adressed, I'd say start getting creative with losing weight from the miata. Get a lightweight bucket. I'll put you lower in the car and weigh less (obviously). and if they let you run with no-top. then either get a quick "disconnect" system for the soft top or ditch it and get a hardtop that you tack off on the track.

Man...this would be so much easier it was a normal vette and not a Z06. I don't think you'll be able to overcome the power to weight issue. If these weren't just for hot laps I'd say youj might have a chance to wear down on him. He'd use more rubber and brakes and gas per lap and that 4 seconds would start dwindling.

Hope that works out for you. I'd like to be able to tell you I've never seen anyone roll a car on it's roof during a solo run. I'd like to be able to tell you that...

dc2696, you've done a very good job setting up your car so far. I urge you to follow kotomile and zabac's suggestions and get a roll bar as soon as possible!

I wouldn't worry to much about beating him. Looks like his car is bone stock. Lets say you make a few mods and catch him...he hasn't modded anything yet, he can go faster, you'll be chasing him forever...I vote rollbar also.

I love to get a rollbar but I absolutely will not as this is a street car and I've heard of more injuries from having one on the street than not having one at the track.

Sorry guys but the risk of killing myself isn't worse than someone getting hurt in an accident on the street. But maybe I'm misinformed, either way thats a topic for another thread.

As for the damper, they really don't get worked that hard on this track. I have a ton of suspension travel, I can't bottom out the suspension as the frame rails hit the ground first (very rarely happens I should add, and never at the track).

I think my tires are the weak spot as I can brake and corner with imo is the most slip they'll allow, I actually tried pushing them one lap and almost gravelled the car twice. So I think with some more rubber on the ground I would be able to corner, brake and accelerate harder than if the suspension shows its weaknesses I can continue to replace that.

Btw I'm off to pick up a race bucket sometime today lol stock seat is hard on the knees in corners lol.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
