Exactly.

For those of you who don't know how DNS (the internet naming system) works, it's like this.

Paypal.com is a root-level domain. When you type that in, your computer goes out to a Domain Name Server, which is like a huge lookup table, like an automatic phone book. The DNS translates the name into an IP address. Then your computer goes out and contacts whatever computer is at the other end of that IP address.

Something.Paypal.com is a specific computer or service within the PayPal domain. So it'll probably wind up in the same general range of IP addresses as the root-level, though not necessarily.


Now, by comparison, paypal.promotionexpert.com is a totally different animal. The root domain here is promotionexpert.com, and paypal.promotionexpert.com is a service running within that domain. The important part here is that promotionexpert.com is owned by a company other than PayPal. You can easily tell this by using the NetworkSolutions WHOIS search client. (Network Solutions is the firm which actually manages the Internet Naming and Numbering System under contract to the US Covernment)

Even more interesting, I get different ownership results for promotionexpert.com than I do for 209.208.189.123, which is what paypal.promotionexpert.com resolves to when I ping it. NetworkSolutions doesn't even recognize the name paypal.promotionexpert.com, which is another red flag.

promotionexpert.com is rebate management company that is managing the promotion for paypal (ebay). They do this service for tons of businesses. It's just like when you mail in a rebate for a place like circuitcity.com - it doesn't go to circuitycity, it goes to a place somewhere else with an address like "circuitcity.com rebate #1567, young america, MN" etc. OR onrebate.com manages all the online rebates for tigerdirect. I used a similar promotion during the holidays from them for using paypal and got a $20 rebate "attributed" to my paypal account.

The amount of the vehicle was $750, and they wanted $11,250 refunded to "cover their shipping expenses". People who fall for that scam really deserve what they get. I was tempted to accept the deal and mail him a rubber check.

There was a great one a while back where some guy had some Apple hardware (a powerbook, I think) on eBay, and somebody tried to pull that scam on him. The seller played along, and shipped the dude a very large a heavy box, freight collect, containing nothing but a bunch of old dead hardware with "PowerBook" written on it.

This is the second time promotionexpert paypal promotions have paid me. 2 for 2 - 100% success. Paypal has a fraud alert form on their site and will confirm any promotions. - rob
