2TC is 2 stops. that lens is f/6 at 500mm so with a TC it would be f/11-12 somewhere in there. The autofocus wouldn't work at that point. TCs are really only for 2.8 lenses that can actually take an f-stop hit; a 1.4TC already puts a 2.8 lens at f/4.

But I'm sure that 150-600mm is best shot at f/8 to begin with for ultra-sharpness; so you need to be shooting in bright sunlight.

Your right, the 2x converter does drop 2 stops. So 11, or maybe 13, since it's 6.3 at the long end. The viewfinder would probably be dark, or black by that aperture. I know it's not practical, just saying, imagine having a lens capable of 1200mm. Canon has a 1200mm for $120,000. Though it's actually usable at f/5.6

Another thought about my camera purchase, I think I decided to get the 40mm 2.8G instead of the 35mm 1.8G. I've always found 35mm a little too wide, and 50mm a little too narrow field on a crop camera. So that fits perfectly. And the 40mm from what I've seen is sharper, especially in the corners. Plus it's macro, even if it's short and not that great for real macro work. Anyone ever shot with the 40mm?

I kind of made a choice that some people might question. D7000 over the D7100. After more pondering and spec browsing, I decided the D7000 is a better fit for me, and at only $699, a major bargain. I don't really need any of the things that the D7100 offers over the D7000. I don't shoot video, so those upgrades are worthless to me. I prefer the 16MP file size over 24MP, especially since I shoot raw. The sharpness from the AA filter removed from the D7100 is only really noticeable at full resolution and at 100%, or on a large print. My files are always at less than 2000 pixels long, so if the sharpness increase is there, it is very very very small and almost not apparent. Besides, the removed AA increases the high ISO noise in the D7100 compared to the D7000. Most of the time I am shooting stationary or slow moving subjects, so the better AF system isn't all that necessary. Not saying it wouldn't be nice, but I can take the loss and not really be bothered. The 39 point system is still pretty decent for when I do need it. Aside from those things, everything else is basically the same. And I actually prefer the back panel layout of the D7000 as well.

Now if they will just ship my damn camera now!!! I'm dying over here!

Very pleased so far with my D7000 and Nikkor 40mm 2.8G lens. There is no question as to whether the D7000 is a step up from my old D5100. It might have virtually the same sensor, but that is where the similarities end. So much better build quality, much better trigger and shutter action (better dampening, less slap than on the D5100), controls are much better, AF is hugely improved. Dynamic range seems to be better, but it's hard to say. It is the same sensor, but the processor might be tweaked.

The 40mm 2.8G Micro is a hell of a lens too. Not the fastest around, but reasonably precise and quick to lock on, and it is able to render colors and detail so nicely. Macro shots are very nice, but it is a bit of a pain being literally right against your subject. I knew that going in, and didn't buy it primarily for the macro anyway.

I'm kinda curious to buy the Tamron 150-600mm when it comes out. a stupid deal for the reach.

Depends on if you need the faster aperture. I myself would go with the 70-200 VC. The 150-600 will be mine eventually though. For less than $1100, that is unbeatable.

I just got my first DSLR at the end of 2012. My brother is professional videographer he has Canon gear so I followed his lead. We actually started a small business selling videography gear, mainly 15mm shoulder rigs.

Just read my first Tamron 150-600 review... I want even more now, damn it. So far, this only review I've found is very very promising. I see no real negatives, besides maybe weather sealing, which Tamron made no mention of, and I'm guessing it doesn't. Though it does have a butt seal on the mount.

I have an accessory to recommend to you camera people. A DSLR hand strap, probably straight from an Asian child labor sweatshop, but for $2.20, the sacrifice of those poor children is worth it. Considering the price, this thing is the best bang for my buck camera purchase ever. I've never used this type of strap system before, and so far I love it. I can hand hold much more steadily, probably a full 2 or 3 stops better, and my hand/fingers don't get tired as fast. Build quality is surprisingly good. Materials are what you would expect I suppose, but of better quality. Vinyl or some type of faux leather outer, with a foam rubber type of inner for grip against the hand. The padding is quite comfy, and feels like memory foam or something similar. The attachment for the bottom is pretty bulky, but does have threads for attaching a tripod, so you don't have to remove it. It is also pretty adjustable to conform to all different size and shape hands. Worth a try for the low cost. Next time you make an order, throw one in the cart. Or if you have Prime like I do, then order one now. Worst case, you're out $2 and some change.

I also can't see why it wouldn't fit other cameras.

I always used to do that too. It worked, but since I don't have a normal strap on this camera, I can't do that. I use a BlackRapid strap that attaches to the tripod mount. So this gives me that same type of security when hand holding it without putting on the strap.

PS. I am so very close to throwing a tantrum over the 150-600. I need this lens! Watching and reading reviews, and they all look so promising. Super fast and precise focusing for such a long lens, and incredible optical performance.

I had the same for like 3 seconds with my D3100. Body was too small that I couldn't really use it and actually hold the body. I could see it working on a larger body, in fact I really need one for my D600, my middle finger was broken a few years back and it's aggravating the injury when i try to one hand it.


Have you been looking at the kitten/cat thread? I posted a bunch of stuff out of my 70-200 2.8 VC.
