I started watching it. Strange subject for the first episode. Couldn't finish it, as I really had nothing but contempt for the main character. I'll try to get through it, and continue on with other episodes.

Well good news: it's an anthology show a la Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Amazing Stories, etc.

Quick and (really) dirty turbo installation 101:

Get yourself a 30 year old junker. Preferably with a million miles (comp test: 75, 77, 75, 75 psi) and a janky 2 barrel carb.
Obtain a turbocharger. You will need nothing else. No pesky engine management, no timing control, nothing.
Warm up your trusty MIG welder, and start the clock.
You have 36 hours to completely modify the body, install the turbo and get the car ready to race.

This is what the car used to look like:
(Not actual car, pics provided for reference)

Delete (cut away) trunk, slam the roof and it begins to take on a new personality:

*** end of the said car:

Oh, and turbo...

Turbo oil feed is from the pressure switch port..

Given the draw through carb setup, I thought it would be best to keep the physical connections as short and straight as possible.
That meant really tight and cramped working room, but it paid out big time.
Even though the carb was located so far away from the manifold, it fired up immediately every time.

For added fuel, I decided to leave the main jets alone and went after the power valve circuit.
The idea was retaining driveability without flooding the cylinders in off-boost conditions.
Power valve had a tiny jet - maybe 0.3 or 0.4 mm. I raped that jet with a 1 mm drill bit.
To my surprise, it worked beautifully.
Boost transition was smooth and the damn thing actually had power. I would get black smoke at higher revs and boost, and I liked it.
I mean, I had some sort of protection with that much fuel up top.

Timing was another adventure.
Set the base timing at 5 degrees as opposed to the factory recommended 10.
Then, I made a det can in about 5 minutes.

That red thing is the ear piece.
It is made up of 4 stacked paper cups (I thought the air gap between cups would insulate outside noise). Could not find copper or aluminum, so I used a piece of 20mm OD pipe instead.
Worked!

Unfortunately, it proved almost impossible to eliminate ping in high gear high rev high boost areas.
So, I said the hell with it, and we proceeded to race that way.
(We'd rather lose the engine than lose a race to the other team - they turned out to be filthy bastards who use any chance to gloat)

The exhaust turned out to be pretty cool:

And, here's the finished car:

Sorry for the horrible framing job. I was pretty much blind under intense sunlight and guesstimated the framing of the pic...

We won all the races.
I had such a clear advantage, I could see the other car in my rear view mirror.
So, I let off the gas and cruised in 3rd and 4th, so pinging never became an issue.

On a side note, both cars were smoking like a turn of the century factory stack at the end of the day.
A rudimentary pressure gauge indicated 14-15 psi max. boost!

But it was a fun day.

That is one of the most hilarious turbo builds I've ever seen.

Great story! I'm curious what mistakes the other team made with their turbo setup.

Pic unrelated.

the above pic reminded me of something: did the covair inject fuel pre-turbo?

Carter sidedraft carburetor pre turbo so yes. Same in both the earlier Snyder and the later Corsa Turbo.

To be perfectly honest, pointing the oil drain down meant clocking the turbo.
Which meant finding a new way to properly mount the wastegate.
Which meant fiddling with more stuff in there.

Time was the issue. Quick and dirty.

I figured saturated journal bearing might produce smoke and I was OK with it.
It did smoke, and the camera "loved" it.
Hell, it was supposed to last for 4 races, that's all. Not even practice.
