I didn't even have to pay the previous year's registration. I just paid the next year's registration early, tow fees, and impound fees. Total cost came to way less than $400.

Don't see the problem y8s. Get yourself a new insurance company if the one you have is going to dick you like that. Get AAA. You can pay DMV registration fees and pick up your tags at any site if you have to wait til the last minute and still want to pay on time. This past year I had to get my car smogged. I paid the registration fees on time to avoid late fees, and got my smog test 2 weeks after my tags expired. Took the smog paperwork back to AAA and they gave me my tags.

Yeah, California DMV sucks. We know that, but if you live here long enough, you figure our when and where you can push the envelope.

Oh, and it normally costs me around $80 to register my car and that's with personalized plates.
My '99 10AE was almost $400 to register. It was sick.

I know that the rates have gone down.

I wouldn't *HAVE* to switch if my current company offered coverage in DC. See the problem? State Farm and Geico both want to pre-inspect.

A DC cop will never pull me over for my CA plates. I could swap the one without the exp stickers onto the back and they'd be none-the-wiser. But when they ask for the papers, I'm screwed.

I DID make one claim on my old (current) insurance for everything. About $2K in random rock chip damage from incessant freeway construction (I had dings on my trunk lid!). $0 deductible and the rates never budged.

I don't plan to re-claim it with the new insurance. I discovered this last week that I can prep and paint a bumper pretty well but I just dont want to.
