So buy a nice clean 4-door DSG GTI with cloth seats and take good care of it, then sell it to me in two years.
Deal.
Deal.
Apparently there are some huge rebates on Focus STs right now. Should be able to get a brand new ST for right around $20k. Redlands ford has quite a few in stock.
Aside from that, there are a ton of options. I'll be looking for a similar car next year, and will probably end up with a late model GTI as well, for the following reasons:
1. Super comfy, practical, good mileage, fun to drive.
2. Girlfriend needs an automatic, and the GTI has the best automatic for the money by far.
Always playing roulette with VW reliability though. Might be great, might not.

My wife's candy white 2012 base/manual/plaid cloth 2 door GTI is for sale... :P
For realz. It has been a great fun, reasonably economic while not melt-your-face-off boring, commuter. I've borrowed it for an autocross and a DE session. It's been acceptably reliable, only leaving her stranded once when less than 3 months old for a HPFP problem. Since then, great. We have driven it from Charleston, SC to Monterrey, CA. Would recommend mk6+ VWs.

Don't even tempt me because I've had a thing for Evo 8/9 since I was 12 years old.
Good to hear the mk6+ GTI don't fall apart like the mk4/5 seemed to, that's what I figured.
I've driven both the Focus ST and Fiesta ST. The GTI just feels like more "car" but I did feel that a part of me would have more fun fligning a Focus around. They just have so much "boy racer" attention to rhem might be the turn off. Focus RS though, ignoring the $55k price tag new, is stupid fun.

And to the other person that mentioned they have 30k miles on their car, that's nothing. Any modern car (unless you happen to get a lemon) should do 100k+ without anything other than tires/brakes/fluids and maybe a serpentine belt.
Look up the replacement price of a gti DSG before committing to that trans. Friend of a friend was quoted 9k. He opted for a 6sp swap instead. Not sure how much or if he beat on it?
