Well, I have to do something on this one, considering I don't have a daily driver. I don't see the hype...I bought a turbo system, engine management, clutch, rear end , lsd, oil cooler, pistons, rods, core motor, brakes, injectors...that's doing something.
I'd go with an older Legacy GT, they don't get the best mpg but other than that should fit your bill pretty well.
Subarus are very reliable cars, they don't get as much credit as Hondas and Toyotas but in my experience there just as reliable.

I'd go with the MS3 - but aren't they doing super low interest now?
The local Maz dealers have been advertising the base MS6 for $20k, and loaded for $23k for months.

Skip the MS3/MS6. The drivelines and engines suck. Many recalls/TSB's. The tuning sucks and there are lots of electrical gremlins, lots of things breaking.
Mazda released he cars way too early and they are very rough. Plus, for all intents and purposes, you're taking your chances with any mod. The speed forums are pretty informative about it. Basically, any mod on the car will void a warranty at the dealers discretion... over and above to an absurd level more than normal.
Stay away from the MS3/MS6, they're not very good cars. The word is out and they're not selling well. I predict '07 to be the last year for the MS6 at least.

A buddy of mine almost bought a prelude that seemed to be running on 3 cylinders. Neither he nor the dealership knew why, but I spotted a purple anodized nitrous nozzle in the intake.. dead giveaway. Needless to say, he didn't buy the car.
