The VW guy who cut his wheel up because he couldn't get a stuck lug bolt off???

Clearly that must be on the list, and it even happened in 2009.

I've been close to that. Some Corvette had had the lug nuts impacted on too many times, and when we tried to remove it, the splines came out of the hub. Nut seized on stud, nothing to keep stud from rotating. Spent waaay too long grinding the back of the stud off from inside the wheel.

BTW- The idea of pouring sand into a running engine sounds ludicrous but something similar was actually recommended in a GM Service Bulletin in 1955. When the small block Chevy was first introduced the cylinders were honed to too fine a finish and the rings tended not to seat well during break-in. this created a problem with excessive blow-by and oil consumption. The service bulletin instructed technicians to add a tablespoon of Bon-Ami kitchen and bathroom scouring powder into the carburetor throat of the running engine. This powder abbrated the cylinder walls enough to cause the rings to seat.
