If people demand tighter security and a highly trained police present on campuses I guess that can be done but expect your tuition costs to sky rocket. Even though this is indeed a tragedy of emmense proportions, I believe it to be an isolated occurence.
Any and all threats? No. Take resonable action to protect the community? Yes.

Bottom line, after the shooting in the dorm the authorities were aware that there was a threat. They choose to do virtually nothing until it became clear something very serious was going on. Once the guy was out killing people it was too late, he would run his course until he killed himself, the cops killed him or he ran out of ammo. But there was nearly two hours where something could have been done.

From the way it was handled it is obvious that common sense was in short supply. What exactly should they have done, I'm not sure. But they should have done something, even if it only saved one person it would have been worth it.

A university campus of 2,600 acres, with more than 25,000 students is like a large town. Good luck with locking down a large town on short notice.

But they should have done something. Easy to say.

A large part of "locking down" is letting people know that something has happened, and just simply canceling classes. The majority of those 25,000 students live off campus and shouldn't have had come to class in the first place.

If I had known that there had been a shooting I would have stayed home regardless of classes being officially canceled. It is just the smart thing to do. I leave for my 8am class at 7:45, 30 minutes after the first shooting, and I check my email every morning. I would expect that most students do.

I don't possibly see what evidence the police had at the time that made them think the shooter had left the campus...

How many people could have been warned had they gotten at it as soon as they knew the shootings took place? How many buildings could have been locked down? Would it have saved anyone? Maybe, maybe not. But doing NOTHING certainly did **** all.

The only positive thing now is to learn from what happened. Maybe this will never happen at VT again, but it'll happen somewhere else. And maybe by viewing the incident with a critical eye mistakes that were made might not be made again.

How many police would it have taken to block off the major roads going on to campus? 20 cop cars? Potentially how many people might have been saved?

no, but a simple, hey guys theres a shooter running around, we dunno if it's safe to go outside, classes are cancelled, would have been something.

the dude went to my middle school and the new high school here, i drive by it everyday to work. two people killed attended the same high school, a think two or three more from this area are dead.

the dude was pycho, stalked classmates, Brain...search Question Mark on facebook, that should be his profile name. When asked in classes what his name was, that's what he always told people. His dormmates said he never talked, laughed, anything, went shooting by himself, was responsible for the bomb threats the previous week. crazy dude.

I personally I'm not sure if any law other than pure totalitarian rule could have stop this type of violence from happening. With a population as dense is the US there will always be crazies running around. Whether it be hang guns, home made grenades, or HIV iinfected blood, there will always be those who feel they must take vegence upon the society that they feel has hurt them.

The truth is that we'll need to learn with live with type of threat like we do with car accidents, terrorism, serial killers, etc.

I'm not condoning killing on any level (aside from self defense where I'll empty the clip), but maybe this will make bullies think twice next time they want to torture kids they go to school with.

Instead of blaming guns, maybe it is time to blame PC and the ACLU.

Time to rebuild the mental hospitals and get rid of all the touchy-feely attitudes. Lock up the homeless again and start commiting people BEFORE they kill.

All the signs were there. In the fifties he would have been committed long before he killed.

To top all of this off, as I walked back down my dorm hall after this morning's class, my neighbor and a few of the other guys on my floor were waving around airsoft guns and being all cocky and intimidating. I could not F-ing believe that they would do that after people were killed two days ago in a dorm shooting. G-Damn I wanted to kill those little bastards.
Sorry, a bit off topic
